I'd never seek a management position. At least not at my company. They are incredibly disorganized. I'd much rather be a craftsman doing actual valuable work for the company, even if I get paid less. It is more interesting and engaging, and keeps me sane. Trying to manage projects would make me go completely nuts. In a way, those who do the real work are the true leaders. If it weren't for them, whatever was being managed wouldn't happen. Most managers I've met seem so fake and have this put on personality for schmoozing with others. I can't relate to that sort of behavior, and am completely incapable of it. Just give me real work and leave me alone, I say.
