Small collections of piano music
on: July 04, 2007, 07:28:45 PM
I enjoy learning small collections of piano music, because usually they are all of very high quality, are great when my friends hear me play and want an encore, and more importantly I can get them cheaply. It has come time to buy some music again, and after spending some time studying standards like the WTC, the Inventions, Mozart's works (Rondo Alla Turca, etc), and Kuhlau sonatinas, I wish for something new. With that in mind, what *small* collections of music would you recommend? My list so far:
The Goldberg Variations
Gershwin's Three Preludes for Piano and Rhapsody in Blue
Bolcom Complete Rags
The Liebermann Gargoyles
Album for the Young
Handel Suites
Some selection Scarlatti Sonatas

Though I have been meaning to explore more modern works, please do not hesitate to recommend any good works. Keep in mind these will be mainly for performances (for family and friends, I am by no means good yet), so no etudes or anything please.

I like Schumann, so what one of his song cycles is recommendable?

I mean to play something by Liszt, does he have any small collections of music that aren't terribly hard, yet sound great?

Many thanks!

well these are the necessities when you are a pianist
JS Bach Prelude and Fugues
Mozart/Beethoven/Haydn/Schubert Classical Sonata
18th Centuary work by Mendelssohn/Schumann/Liszt/Chopin
18/20th Centuary work by Debussy/Rachmaninoff etc...

I would reccomend that you carry on learning J.S Bach's Preludes and Fugues. You should learn a complete classical sonata by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn or Schubert like Mozart's K570, if you want to try Beethoven Op.49. No.2, Haydn's Sonata No.33 in D major and for Schubert you would have to ask someone else. You could try Mendelssohn's Song without words, and Schumann's Arabeske Op.18. For Debussy you could try his Clair de lune and some selected works from his children's corner.
J.S Bach Italian Concerto,Beethoven Sonata op.2 no.2,Mozart Sonatas K.330&333,Chopin Scherzo no.2,Etude op.10 no.12&Fantasie Impromptu

Try some Scriabin miniatures.  He had a very diverse range of compositional styles from his early Chopinesque years to very modern sounding music.

Dover publishes a volume of Preludes & Etudes.  You may be interested in the former.

There is also a volume of miniatures and short pieces.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I have the book of Scriabin preludes; I shall take a look at them. I got them a while back, but I do not know if I am good enough to do them justice yet.

I have the Kjos books 8, 9, and 10 of Romantic/Contemporary and I am set for my general repertoire, amelialw, I just need some specific suggestions of pieces.

Thanks for your recommendation quantum! Any specific preludes I should take a look at first,  being easier or of higher musical quality than the rest?
