I enjoy learning small collections of piano music, because usually they are all of very high quality, are great when my friends hear me play and want an encore, and more importantly I can get them cheaply. It has come time to buy some music again, and after spending some time studying standards like the WTC, the Inventions, Mozart's works (Rondo Alla Turca, etc), and Kuhlau sonatinas, I wish for something new. With that in mind, what *small* collections of music would you recommend? My list so far:
The Goldberg Variations
Gershwin's Three Preludes for Piano and Rhapsody in Blue
Bolcom Complete Rags
The Liebermann Gargoyles
Album for the Young
Handel Suites
Some selection Scarlatti Sonatas
Though I have been meaning to explore more modern works, please do not hesitate to recommend any good works. Keep in mind these will be mainly for performances (for family and friends, I am by no means good yet), so no etudes or anything please.
I like Schumann, so what one of his song cycles is recommendable?
I mean to play something by Liszt, does he have any small collections of music that aren't terribly hard, yet sound great?
Many thanks!
