This amazing piece called "allegro"
on: July 06, 2007, 07:18:13 PM
I played the Wanderer Fantasy at a recital.  The last movement -- the fugue --is marked "allegro."

This woman came up to me afterward and said, "you know that one song you played at the end of your concert--'allegro'--well, I think they played 'allegro' at my wedding.  I think that's why I liked it so much."

I just stared at her in disbelief.

It's an original idea though--brides marching down the aisle to that.

Anyway, I think I'm going to start calling pieces by their tempos.  When people ask me to play, I'll be like, "this one's called 'vivace' and the next one is called 'presto'."  Or maybe I'll call some wedding pianists and request that they play 'andante' at my wedding.

I would prefer "larghetto"  ;)
If it doesn't work - try something different!

Do you think that the Schubert counts as a Classical Larger form or would it be romantic?  It's very much at the heart of Romantic experimentation.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Would you like me to play the grave e mesto for your wedding procession?  :P
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Hmmm.....I've always thought of it as a Romantic piece.  You're right that it's at the heart of Romantic experimentation.  Harmonic adventurousness, unclear divisions between movements, cyclicism, all quite romantic traits.  My goal was to make fun of someone, but you had to go and make this an intelligent conversation.... ;)

A coworker and I used to joke how similar the wedding march and funeral march are...  Now he's getting married and asked me to play for the wedding.  Do I have the nerve to play the funeral march?  He'd get a kick out of it.  His wife would strangle me.

Do it in a major mode and throw in a descending bass line.  Only he will catch it.

That's a good idea, thanks!

Off-topic: 1337 speech is so "three years ago."  IE, it's antedated and obsolete.
