Need a couple suggestions for pieces
on: July 20, 2007, 07:15:18 PM
I'm going to take the National Guild of Piano Teachers Audition and I need a few more easier pieces to fill up the space. I need suggestions for a grade 7 or 8 Baroque piece (maybe an invention or sinfonia, or easier prelude or fugue).

I also need a classical piece, and a modern piece. All of these need to be grade 8 or below and not too long (maybe 1-3 minutes) preferably because I need to spend more time working on my other more difficult pieces. Thanks.

Btw I'm also looking for some left hand or right hand only pieces that don't require large hands (preferably no more than an octave). These can be more difficult.

For the Baroque piece you could try Bach's Prelude and Fugue in Ab, BWV 862: No. 17

For the Classical piece you should learn a sonata. You can choose between: Mozart Allegro: 1st movt from Sonata in F, K. 332, Beethoven Allegro vivace: 1st movt from Sonata in G, Op. 31 No. 1, Haydn Allegro: 1st movt from Sonata in C, Hob. XVI/50, Mozart Allegro con spirito: 1st movt from Sonata in C,K. 309 or Schubert Allegro moderato: 1st movt from Sonata in E flat D. 568, Op. 122.

For your Modern Piece:
1 Eleanor Alberga If the Silver Bird could speak
2 Martin°u The Puppets’ Dance: No. 5 from Puppets, Book 1
3 Prokofiev Gavotte: No. 2 from Three Pieces from Cinderella, Op. 95
2007–2008, Grade 8
4 Ravel Mouvement de menuet: 2nd movt from Sonatine (ABRSM Publishing)
5 Turina Vals romántico: No. 3 from Linterna mágica, Op. 101
6 Copland Jazzy: No. 3 from Three Moods
7 Albéniz Rumores de la caleta (Malagueña): No. 6 from Recuerdos de viaje, Op. 71. No. 12 from A Keyboard
Anthology, Third Series, Book 5 (ABRSM Publishing)
8 Bortkiewicz Prelude: No. 1 from Six Preludes, Op. 13 (Rahter/MDS)
9 Brahms Intermezzo in E (Adagio): No. 4 from Seven Fantasies, Op. 116 (ABRSM Publishing)
10 Chopin Nocturne in F minor, Op. 55 No. 1. No. 15 from Chopin Nocturnes (Henle 185 or Henle 185/MDS)
11 Debussy La sérénade interrompue: No. 9 from Préludes, Book 1 (UMP)
12 Gershwin Liza (this arrangement only). Meet George Gershwin at the Keyboard (Faber; album formerly issued
by IMP)
13 Grieg Notturno (Nocturne): No. 4 from Lyric Pieces, Book 5, Op. 54. No. 27 from Grieg 38 Pianoforte Pieces, Book 2
(ABRSM Publishing)
14 Moeran Irish Love Song: No. 1 from Two Folksong Arrangements. Moeran Collected Solo Piano Music, Vol. 2
(Thames/Music Sales)
15 Poulenc Toccata: No. 3 from Trois Pièces pour piano (Heugel/UMP)
16 Rachmaninov Prelude in F: No. 7 from 13 Preludes, Op. 32 (Boosey & Hawkes/MDS)
J.S Bach Italian Concerto,Beethoven Sonata op.2 no.2,Mozart Sonatas K.330&333,Chopin Scherzo no.2,Etude op.10 no.12&Fantasie Impromptu

Let's see, pieces I haven't played in previous auditions...

Baroque
Concerto in F Minor, 2nd Movement-Bach

Classical
Allegretto in C Minor-Beethoven
Pathetique Movement 1

Romantic

Nocturne in B flat minor
Etude Op. 10 No.3
Mazurka Op. 7 No. 1
Prelude in G Major Op. 28 No.3-Chopin

Prelude in G Minor-Rachmaninoff

Modern
Jazz piece grade 7
Visions Fugitives #15

I'm planning to learn the P/F in Ab for g8, along with the 31/1 1st movement + chopin f minor nocturne. Also I want to learn Revolutionary+2nd movement of Pathetique, maybe 3rd + Rachmaninoff prelude in B minor. I need 15 pieces total for the audition, preferably 4 Baroque, 4 Classical, 4 Romantic and 3 Post-Romantic.

woah...if you're gonna play 31/1 1st movement, I suggest you learn and play the whole thing instead of learning the Revolutinary and 2nd mvt of Pathetique, or learn the whole Pathetique or learn the whole Revoulutinary not take bits and pieces and put them together...If I listened to to that i'll seriously go all groggy... and btw does'nt each sonata count as 1 piece?

Oh each movement counts as a piece... I have no clue what I'm auditioning for either... lol my parents just say keep taking exams/auditions b/c then you can put them on college app. I don't really mind but I don't really like taking too much time away from rep. because of scales/theory etc.
