Billions upon billions of dollars are spend on the olympics every 4 years.
People admire speed, those who claim not to are mostly pretentious people who wish they had it.
That's the difference between Olympics and the art of piano playing... not enough money is being spent on piano playing, not enough people understand that the art of music is not about speed...
I have all the speed I need and I don't admire speed for speed.
As a matter of fact, I never in my life measure the speed of my scales, etudes, or anything else.
Normally I play most things slower than most pianists and it is out of choice and not necessity...
I like to hear all the notes...
I also have relatively big hands and a very big span, but will mostly use "small hands" fingering and also recommend it to others and teach it.
In general, I believe that one should not use all the time everything within the ability and capabilty, but save and when necessary, give/do...
