On musicians and epoches
on: November 12, 2007, 01:17:32 PM
Who is your favourite composer, or cluster of composers?
Are they from the same era in classical musics developent?
Do you enjoy neo-calssical artists and modern classical music?
Can recomment any composers from that category that are worth checking out?
I love J S Bach, I think he must be my favourite composer. Im not so keen on modern composers.

JS Bach is wonderful.
Just out of curiosity, which modern composers are you familiar with? Perhaps I can direct you to something different than what you know that might allow you to give contemporary music another shot.

Asked if he had ever conducted any Stockhausen,Sir Thomas Beecham replied, "No, but I once trod in some."

Thanks McGill. I'm very new to the modern composers, I've been happily rockin along in the cradle of baroque and romantism when all of a sudden along came a gust of modernism and as the story goes my cradle did fall.
I like Messiaen is small doses, especially the guartet till the end of time.
I find the following tough to stomach. Bartok,Carl Nielson, Stravinksy, shoenberg, Sir Malcom Arnold, shoshtakoch,Aaron Copland, Takemitsu, Fukai,El khoury, and a couple others I cant recall.
I have not given them all much of a listening. I mostly turn it off after a shirt while. I find it very dark and somber.
I did just finsh listening to a symphony by Sir M Arnold which i got into though.
But over all so far im struggling( :

Me is mainly interested in the neglected composers/transcribers of the 19th Century.
Pixis, Woelfl, Cramer, Fumagalli, Martucci, Thalberg...........................
