Religious or religious-sounding music
on: November 25, 2007, 01:25:34 AM
Well, my dad wants me to learn some pieces that are religious, or at least religious sounding to "share my talents" with the world(or something like that, or was it to glorify God through my playing, whatever). What a load of bull. But, being obedient, lest I be forced to move out, I would like to ask for suggestions for pieces that fit these  characteristics:
1. must be not too short nor too long(2mins-3mins should be fine) It's perhaps to accompany the people who go around collecting the offerings...
2. must not be too hard(since I'll be practicing my main rep)
3. must sound somewhat religious and still musically pleasing for me to stand playing

That's it. I anticipate your replies.

PS- If you could share the sheetmusic I would be forever in your debt.
That's the price you pay for being moderate in everything.  See, if I were you, my name would be Ilovepie.  But that's just me.

Second movement (Andante) of Schubert Sonata #6 D.V. 664, Op. 120. Adequately religious sounding while also musically rewarding to play. Oh, and while we're at it, your father's concept of "sharing your talents with the world" is in desperate need of revision. ::)
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den, der heimlich lauschet.

Messiaen Vingt Regarde #1 Actually sounds pretty religious.

I'msure you could find a reduction of "Cast Thy Burden Upon The Lord" from Mendelssohn's Elijah.

You could even do Pilgrim's Chorus, a la Liszt transcription or the Spirito Sanctus or whatever from Rienzi.

Bach-Busoni Adagio, from Toccata in C Major
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Try this beautiful transcription.  I think it fits the bill.

you could always "borrow" your local church hymnal...it's easy sight-reading and you can reach your father's quota.

I wasn't quite sure what you meant by something to accompany people (singers maybe) ?  Try finding the music for Ave Maria.  Its fairly straightforward and well known in religious circles.  Much harder for singer as I understand, but the piano portion is attainable with some work.

I'll second that. That whole entire set is very religious, but this is the only one with an easier difficulty and reasonable length. This piece is very serene and at the same time is very religious and moving.

Messiaen is about as religious as Christopher Hitchens after downing a crate of scotch.

Watch the piece and shut up, Jake.

Messiaen is pretty boring when he's not making a lot of noise; even then, he's just making a lot of noise.

As for my pick, here's what I consider a perfect example of divinely-inspired music, divinely interpreted:
