Kapustin no longer able to play?
on: February 07, 2008, 09:10:30 PM
I just had a friend inform me that Nikolai Kapustin has received an injury to one of his hands and that it's supposed to be pretty serious. With the current surging of interest for his music i was hoping for more recordings of this formidable pianist playing his own compositions, and it would be a tragedy if his late career would go to a grinding halt before even starting. Can anybody confirm this?

This was long a rumor, but it seems to be wrong. He indeed did receive a serious injury, but he is apparently still able to play. He has returned to the studio and a disk of solo works is supposed to come out soon.

Well, i'm relieved. Anybody knows where one can find his recordings? I have most of the commercially released albums by other performers but those featuring Kapustin himself are impossible to locate and i had to download them through p2p. :(

I suppose this could be a separate topic, but this thread reminds me of how much of our identity is associated with our piano playing. I had a professor who suffered a stroke and suddenly in a split second lost her LH technique - she had to fight her way back to playing the simplest things. I have also known promising career pianists/teachers who developed crippling arthritis later in life. This is not to mention the possibility of traumatic injury. While I realize it's not healthy to dwell on this, every once in a while I think of what would happen in and to my life if I could no longer express myself through my art and how much my sanity depends on those hours spent at the piano. Sobering thoughts--so cherish and protect your health.

Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den, der heimlich lauschet.

I'm very sorry to hear what happened to this great musician.

My teacher recently recorded Kapustin's 15th Sonata along with some etudes and bagatelles.  The album comes out this month on the Naxos label.

I have already heard that disk. Marvelous playing in the 15th sonata. But, because I've heard Kapustin play the other pieces on the disk, the other pieces were sorta dry compared to the man himself. Great playing nonetheless.
