I suppose this could be a separate topic, but this thread reminds me of how much of our identity is associated with our piano playing. I had a professor who suffered a stroke and suddenly in a split second lost her LH technique - she had to fight her way back to playing the simplest things. I have also known promising career pianists/teachers who developed crippling arthritis later in life. This is not to mention the possibility of traumatic injury. While I realize it's not healthy to dwell on this, every once in a while I think of what would happen in and to my life if I could no longer express myself through my art and how much my sanity depends on those hours spent at the piano. Sobering thoughts--so cherish and protect your health.
