Boris Berezovsky Cancels US Tour!
on: February 10, 2008, 07:16:26 PM
Oh man...I had killer seats for his Rachmaninoff and Chopin-Godowsky extravaganza in San Francisco on 2/17! He's being replaced by Alexander Korsantia (a Chopin and Mussorgsky program). I think I'll pass--if anyone wants to buy a pair of tickets for $50 ($64 face price), let me know.

Well, I would not be that fast on that.
A. Korsantia is quite an incredible pianist, muuuch more interesting musician, with much more personality in his playing than Berezowsky. I believe, his drive is unsurpassed.
His Pictures From Exhibition are among the best I ever heard.

It very well might be that you actually lucked out.

If I didn't already have tickets for Yundi Li, who is also playing Pictures, I would go.

If you change your mind and give it a chance, you might find that A. Korsantia is a much more charismatic performer than Yundi Li.

No doubt, but I don't want to hear Pictures twice in just a few weeks--nor am I such a big Chopin fan.

My wife loves Chopin, so if no one wants the tickets, I'll probably go. I suppose it will make an interesting comparison! Yundi is also playing Rachmaninoff's Sonata No.2, as was Berezovsky, so that too would have been interesting.

To those of you who suggested I go anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you! Wow, he was incredible. At times I was reminded of the tremendous virtuosity of Lazar Berman, at others the probing introspection of Sokolov. I've never heard such volcanic eruptions as he produced in "The Great Gates of Kiev." In addition to "Pictures", he played Haydn Sonata in F Hob XVI/23 and a Chopin group: Nocturne Op.15 No.1, Ballade No.4, and Scherzo No.1. He played everything with an amazing array of colors and drama. Quite a fine recital, I must say!

I told you what to expect  ;).
Mind you, today during the concert he was completely sick.

Wow...I can't imagine what he'd be like when he's feeling well!

I can't find any recordings or youtube videos...what a shame that he isn't an household name.

His first album will be issued this year in Europe.

Someone had told me a while back that Berezovksy won't play in the States anymore, because he doesn't like being fingerprinted at customs.  Any truth to this rumor, or has he played in the States in the past 2-3 years?

Well, yes. In fact, I do  ;). I called him and he gave me OK to post it.

It is going to be a 2 CD album of his life performances. The first CD is almost ready and needs only some minor sound changes and will be dedicated to Prokofiev--Pastoral Sonatina, Sonatas No. 7 and 8, and a small Vision Fugitive.

The second CD is still open for changes, but most likely will include a couple small Bach transcriptions (Petry, and something else), Haydn Sonata, unknown Beethoven early Sonata (I believe he was 12 years old when wrote it), and Stravinsky-Agosti Firebird Suite.
And maybe something else. If you are interested in a few days I will know better.

BTW, the entire Prokofiev disk and Stravinsky-Agosti are spectacular. The rest... I did not have time to listen, yet  :D.

Best, M

Haha randomly I missed a concert (it was before I got into classical stuff) with Berezovksy playing the NIGHTWIND, CORELLI VARIATIONS and after the break some Chopgods. I do have a recording from that recital though, it was in Amsterdam.
