Guidance needed: I want to play emotional music
on: February 29, 2008, 02:02:24 PM
Hello everyone!

I need a bit of guidance on how to move forward. Any help is greatly appreciated!

My piano skills are quite poor; I've been playing pop and mostly chords but that's about it. However, I can read notation.

Now, I want to learn romantic music, emotional music - music that makes me happy and makes me cry. It doesn't have to be very complicated all the time, and it doesn't need to conform to exact rhythm either. I don't know if anyone has heard or can get a hold of the odd tracks on (one of my favorite albums) "Forever" by Dune, but I think that's my cup of tea here.

Any general advice would be lovely, but here are a couple of questions: Where can I find this type of music? How should I practice? Are there any special practice sheets? (I found some in the PDF archive of this site.)

Also, do you know the artists that have made the piano tracks on Dune - Forever? On the record it says "Burhoff / Oettrich". Do you know how I can get the notation for these tracks?

Thank you so very much in advance!

Edit: Due to the ambigouity of the term "romantic", I replaced the word with "emotional" in the subject.

If you want something emotional to play I would do Chopin. His songs are perfect for an emotional release. I would start with the preludes, there not that hard but still very pretty. I also like to play Rachmaninaff, but his songs tend to be harder to play. Hope this helps. :)

Well, only you know what music makes YOU happy and makes YOU cry. I suggest you listen to as many different kinds of music as you can, and when you hear something you like, hunt for the sheet music. Most things are available somewhere.

Pop music is great until you decide you really want to develop a solid technique, then you need to switch to classical (and get a teacher!).

I wasn't clear about this - I want to play classical music. :-)

Another website I like is sheetmusicplus.com they have a lot of music. The only thing is that you have to buy the book, you can't download whole songs.
You can get the sample/first page though. If you hear a classical song you like, just write it down and go see if they have it. :)

You can go to the library and copy the sheetmusic, thats usually the best (apart from buying the book). You can also go to www.sheetmusicarchive.net ,  but these days its limited to like 3 downloads a day.

Btw, Chopin is ultimately emotional, but hard to really finish. Schubert is in general less hard to play (but also less emotional). Beethoven's moonlight sonata (first part) makes you cry and is easy to play.

I love sheetmusicarchive!! As soon as I found it, it only let me get a couple downloads and now every time I get on it, it won't let me download anything else. But it's an awesome site.

Yes i like it too, earlier there was no download limit and i (illegally) let the laserprinter of my old school work for hours, i wasted 1 laser cartrige  8)
But the quality of those sheets arent good enough if you want to play a bit more challenging piece since the fingering isnt good or isnt there at all.
Btw, 1 trick on sheetmusicarchive..... if you're downloading certain series (for example an entire sonata, or all chopin etudes w/e), you can change the corresponding number in the site adress. That way you'll hop to that sheetmusic and bypassing the download limit ;)

By the way: Couldn't find the notations I was looking for... I guess they are just too underground. I recommend you to listen to it though! :-)

You confused me when you mentioned Dune. I have to admit I don't know what it is -- are you talking about the movie?

For example, the link to chopin etude op10/1 is: https://www.sheetmusicarchive.net/compositions_b/et10_1.pdf

If you want to download the second etc too, just change the '1' from the adres into '2'.

No, it's a group the made electronic dance music from the beginning but later on switched to work with the London Session Orchestra to make orchestral covers of famous love songs and such but also instrumental piano. :-) It's really, really beautiful and I think you should listen to it!

The term 'romantic', when speaking of music, does not imply 'emotional'.

In generalising terms, you could use the term 'emotional' for 'romantic' though :p

What do you mean by 'generalizing' terms? It is quite simple: the term 'romantic' does not imply 'emotional'. Even so, the use of 'emotional' is way out of whack anyway. Emotional doesn't imply slow, sappy, and full of angst either - joy is an emotion as is anger, frustration, etc.

Because the 'romantic period' is called that way because people (in literature and music) used emotional reasoning instead of rational reasoning (as in the renaissance).

You've just proven yourself to be an advocate of binary thinking. Congratulations.

I would say, any music is emotional. Perhaps you mean slow...?  ::)

I just want to say that I would really appreciate if any of you guys would download Dune - Forever and listen to the odd numbers and give your thoughts about it. I think it may answer some of the questions I have not been able to ask but also give you a wonderful record to listen to. My Piano Street account will expire so I wont be able to reply in this thread until I renew it (no money and not much time to invest in piano playing right now), so please e-mail me at info (attt) jonkri (dottt) org. :)

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
