I'm not impressed
on: March 01, 2008, 05:04:08 AM
I bought a 160GB Ipod at the beginning of January and I just filled it a few minutes ago.  Music only.

What Ipod doesn't understand is that people who listen to classical music might want to put, say... 1000 Symphonies and Sonatas instead of 1000 songs on it.  Carmen = 180 minutes, Roxanne = 4 minutes.  Fail.  They need to come out with like, the "Stradivarius" edition, which is just a TB HD with a screen =P  It would be worth the size to be able to actually fit a decent amount of music on it XD

I wouldn't want to have to wear my MP3 player with a set of backpack straps when I'm going for a walk. Besides, most of my excursions on foot, bike, or car don't take 500 hours one-way or roundtrip. Of course, if I ever decide to circumnavigate the globe in a balloon, you might have me eating my words.

On a more real note, IPods are pieces of s**t that would probably start breaking down before you got through listening to all that music. It wouldn't be worth paying the extra price for any Apple shitbox that may not outlast the average Ipod Shuffle's lifespan.

I want my next Ipod to be able to sing like these appliances... (

I think it's very sad that a whole generation is growing up thinking that mp3's and other drastically compressed formats are the way recorded music is supposed to sound. At least try to get a "lossless" format like flac.

Foobar2000 is the only player on my computer I use (bacause it plays flac and ogg).  My music on my computer plays through a 7.1 American Acoustic into a Sherwood out of a Yamaha X-wave pro card.

Should put the idea that us "young kids" don't know how to listen to music.  Or at least one of us.

Not really.  I have a friend that has a 2nd gen that works perfectly.  Only problem with them, assuming you take care of them, is that the batteries stop taking a charge after about 30 months.  Luckily I got the replacement plan, baby 8)  Radioshack replacement plans sound like a ripoff when they try to sell them to you, but they're really REPLACEMENT plans.  Anything goes wrong, get a new one for free.  I plan to have my battery stop working about 23 months and 29 days from when I bought mine 8)

Listening to 1 hour of classical music lasts just as long as listening to 1 hour of pop.

Well, you cannot argue with that.

I may not be able to argue with it, but I can argue how inane it is!  And actually, that's possibly inaccurate, because on average an hour of pop music might involve anywhere from 12-14 tracks, and there will be pauses.  Listening to an hour-long symphony may only have 3 pauses between tracks, and thus would be a few seconds shorter even 8)

But... to find 160GB of good popular music would be a LOT harder than finding 160GB of good classical music, just because classical tracks are so much longer each one you find takes a much longer portion of space on your Ipod.  So like I said, you might like 1000 songs (I don't know hardly anyone who as 1000 songs on their Ipod anyway) but if you try to put 1000 symphonies or equally longer classical works then it will fill your ipod a LOT faster.

Being a cheapskate and a total stick in the mud, I have still been holding on to the battery that I got in mine 3 years ago. Surprisingly, it's still working. I've had to open the bastard up and re-set the pins in the hard-drive a few times, but there have been no major problems. The fact that the batteries are pretty much guaranteed to be finite is just plain annoying, especially since I don't recall ever seeing Apple-brand replacement batteries available off the shelf at the retail shitholes that sell the Ipod (I haven't recently looked into this, so I might be wrong). I know that there are several third-party companies that sell their own versions of the battery, but it would be nice if Apple didn't make it seem like there isn't any option besides mailing the piece of crap back for a $200+ battery replacement (which, since opening it, I figured out how to do).

As for the sound quality issues, I have decided to rest my laurels on the middle-ground of listening to MP3s with 256-320 quality, simply because I got tired to buying hard-drives and burning DVDs. Aside from that, I still buy tons of used CDs and listen to them on my $100 Sony boombox or the computer. I'd love to become an audiophile and buy a sick system, but I usually just end up buying more discs, sheet music, and xerox credit instead.

If I had a 160 gig Ipod, I could probably fill a lot of it up with my jazz/improv collection OR my classical collection. Both genres boast monster track lengths (many experimental jazz/avant albums consist of one big unbroken track). However, I still prefer the cheaper models because none of that sh*t will matter if it falls out of my pocket into a mud puddle or gets crushed when I roll over it in my sleep.

I would never have the patience to load up that much music.  1G is plenty, I can fit 10 or so disks on there with the highest bitrate and I'm good to go.  No need to have my entire CD collection with me everywhere I go.

Besides I think it's not the best idea to fill every spare moment with music.  My mind gets numb to my favorite music.  The music is all the sweeter for not having heard it all day.

Anyways, I've had good luck with Sony products.  So far they've lasted me well and I can be pretty rough on my electronics...
