Easy/Relatively Easy Chamber music.
on: March 20, 2008, 12:40:21 PM
Hello, this year at the conservatoire I’m attending I have a class called "Chamber Music." Naturally I assume the professor will know what to do and how to decide on what works go to whom and how to pair up the students, but since classes haven't started yet I am quite anxious in getting familiar with a basic chamber music repertoire that isn't TOO demanding for a piano student (me), yet musical and enjoyable.

I suppose all possibilities are doable, clarinet-piano, voice-piano, violin-piano, cello-piano, etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I don’t expect to learn these right away, since in the end the professor will end up deciding, but just to… get a taste haha, of what’s coming along, and to see if I can get recordings of these as well.

Since the education system is different here and we don’t really work with “grades”, here are the pieces I’m working on right now to give a basic idea of what I can and can’t play.

Beethoven Sonata Op. 14/2 No 2 in G Major
Chopin Posthumous Waltz in e minor
Bach prelude and fugue no. 5 in D major from WTC 1
And a Czerny etude from Op. 740 No 49 “Octaves Bravura”

Also! I’m not sure if I’m way out of line in saying this, but I’ve been listening to a whole bunch Alban Berg’s Lieder lately, and is it me or does the piano seem not difficult at all??? (Technically of course)

To study an Alban Berg piece would make me very happy!

One of my favs (not that easy though):

Franck - Sonata in A for Violin + Piano  (there is also a flute transcription)

A fun piece is:

Franz Doppler - Andante and Rondo, Op. 25 (2 flutes + piano)

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Franck!!!!  That piece is notorious for being hard as hell for the piano.  Infact its like a piano piece with violin accompaniment...I would not choose that!  Although, I do I like that piece.

I would probably choose a Haydn or Mozart chamber piece.
Holst -The Planets for 2 pianos also has some easy movements but are very effective.  Like "Mars."  and that is not a transcription either...he really wrote it for 2 pianos first and then orchestrated it after.
I also have a bunch of stuff on my website that might interest you.  mattgreenecomposer.com

Beethoven's sonata for horn and piano (Op. 17) is transcribed for cello and piano. It is very manageable.

Also, the Brahms cello sonata in e minor is one of the easier pieces of chamber music and is absolutely stunning; the composer intended for it to be easy, so it should be right up your alley.

I used to play with a flutist, and the Poulenc sonata is not too bad for the piano. Also the Bach B minor sonata. The Franck is a killer!

Some of Schubert's song accompaniments are not too bad, but stay away from the Erlkonig...

But if your teacher is picking the music, and the point is to grade you as a pianist, you're probably not going to be able to get away with doing the easy stuff.

Check into Music Minus One recordings. There used to be one of the Trout Quintet IIRC.

Try the Loeillet trio for piano, oboe and recorder, Op 1 No 1. It's lovely to play and to hear
