Performance coming up...
on: May 29, 2008, 09:13:49 AM
My music class is going to perform at an old folks' home in a couple of weeks, and I'm going as a soloist to play for them.

To put it bluntly, I need something to play. Preferably not too depressing.
I was thinking Debussy's Arabesque No.1 or his Sarabande from Pour le Piano. My only concern there is that I may not be able to learn them in time (I've already started the Sarabande, but I'm at the 'I can play the right hand well, but I freak out when I get to the large looking arpeggiated chords in the left hand  :-[)
I also thought about either Gymnopedie No. 1 or Gnossienne No. 1 by Satie. I really like the Gnossienne, not so much the Gymnopedie, but I think they might be too depressing. Also someone else might be playing the Gnossienne.

So...any thoughts on pieces I could play that are about that level? If they are about the same level as the Gnossienne that I will definitely be able to learn them easily, but if they are about the Sarabande, I'm gonna have a little more difficulty.

Thanks in advance :)

Gnossienne #1 is nice, but yes, perhaps a little depressing.  :'(

Get a few pieces really ready that you already know,
and play the one you fancy on the day.  8)

That's the thing though...the pieces I already know are a little depressing, or to easy to be at the same standard as the class.

My grandma suggested Claire de Lune after I posted this - if I can't find anything else I'll do that.

Have you tried the theme from the film "The Piano"?

That is a good easy'ish one, and sounds great.

Perfect. Grandma knows best.

Tried it, and couldn't get the melody in both the left and right hand out enough for it to sound good.

I had another thought...Pavane by Faure, piano arrangement.

It miht be too depresing though, and I'd have to arrange it so it's shorter, because it pretty much just repeats a lot.

or beethoven's op.111 sonata no.32. :) oughta give those old folks the time of their life. bt their probably too deaf to hear. or 1 of bach's goldberg variations. i suggest the aria. it's beautiful beyond words. of course under professional hands, it becomes music coming directly from god.

Hmm...looks like I might not have a performance coming up after all...my child studies class has an excursion on the same day, and it is more important as it is being assessed.

End of term-wise, I will consider people's suggestions definitely.

Your studies are more important than one performance,
that you were not even sure what to play.
