folks, i want you to help me figuring out the name of the food i ate at the restaurant.
amoung several kinds of bread from which i could choose, this particular bread and kind of sause
became real favorite of mine.
the bread was quite flaky so that i should be carefull not to break it when i pick one up.
and beside the bread there was this grayish sause.  i dunk the bread in it and it tasted fabulous.
my guess is that the bread is called corn bread and the sause gravy.  however, i am not sure at all since i have never eaten them before and after.
other food was rather familiar to me, like baked potatos, bagel, fryed eggs, etc, so i suppose this bread and sause too is not very uncommon food for breakfast at hotel......

any clue? thanks!

Did it look like this?

Cornbread muffins

Biscuits and sausage gravy

I would guess it was biscuits and gravy if you had gravy with it.  Cornbead would have butter and syrup.

This is more what I think of for cornbread....

And cornbread can be a little more rougher, as in having little bits or corn in it.  And it can turn into a rock pretty fast.

I suppose you could really tell by the color.  Was it white or yellow?

thanks bob.
well, it looks like neither corn muffin or cornbread is the one i ate.
as i remember, the shape of the bread was rather close to muffins, but the color was not that yellow.
and knowing what muffins feel like when i chew one, i can say that the bread was less, much less moist than muffins and really flaky.
the color was..... as i recall vaguely......... somewhere between white and gray.

the color of the gravy is very close to what i ate, only mine was almost just sause. no sausages, anything.

gravy dose not always have stuff in it and it might have been corn bread but they sometimes look different.

ok, now the sause seems to be "white gravy" apparently. (thanks wiki)

only that bread remains unidentified.
from what i learned, white gravy usually is served with biscuits.
were those biscuits? hmmmmm.
they didnt taste and feel like the biscuits you get at kentucky fried chicken though...
they were softer, lighter, and much more flaky.

your bet please?  ;)

Okay, now you've got me intrigued.

What hotel was it and where in the city?  What kind of cuisine (overall) were they serving?

Was the biscuit dough layered with many thin, flakey, semi-chewy layers?  Could it be filo dough?

Tell me the hotel and the name of its restaurant and I'll call them for you.

I'm guessing it was just a breakfast biscuit - the reason it didn't taste like the KFC ones is because dinner rolls/biscuits are typically heavier than breakfast ones (Americans and our biscuits. . . and then we WONDER why we're such an o.b.e.s.e. nation  :P).

As far as flaky biscuits go, I eat all organic except for one, terrible thing that I have literally once a year - Pillsbury flaky biscuits. Those things are deadly  ;D. I'd recommend nixing biscuits altogether. Learn from our mistakes  ;).

thanks for your interest.

hotel :  sheraton new yourk hotel & towers,  811 7th avenue 53nd street new york
restaurant : avenue restaurant
cuisine : american
breakfast was one of those typical (to me at least)hotel breakfast;  self-service, several kinds of bread, cereals, fruit, etc
to choose from and baked potatos, sausages, fried eggs etc.
and the baked thing was placed  not amoung breads but in line with eggs, potatos etc.(beside gravy)

and i wiki-ed filo dough but its not the one.
the thing was not at all crispy nor chewy. rather light, whitish, and errrrr  "fragile"? "frail"?... imagine you  make a snowball using least possible pressure. it felt something like that.   (i just cant find the right adjective!!!! im not even sure if flaky is right word)

so general, thank you if you really would call the hotel and inquire for me  ;)
i really want to know........

oh, and i didnt know there were so many kind of cereals as well.......(and raisins, currant..... gold, purple etc)
