Hi, i'm just wondering is it safe to put an upright piano on its side to fit it around an awkward corner?

Yes. When done by professional piano movers.

Further to George Fiore's answer, I'd point out that uprights are designed to withstand being stood on their side, on a trolley, but they are very heavy (in case you hadn't noticed) and it needs strength, care and experience (all three, not one or another!) to get them into that position. Likely results of unsuitable handling include the piano falling, which will usually entail:

1. Damage to the piano.

2. Damage to the floor and/or walls, depending on the angle it falls at.

3. Serious personal injury.

In other words, don't try this at home.

To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
