Chopin Etude Op 25 no 12 Ocean
on: July 31, 2008, 06:04:18 AM
This is definitely a work in progress (and also my first etude).
Sorry about the recording quality, I'm still trying to figure out how to get the best results with the limited equipment that I have.

The biggest problem I'm having is starting out too loud. If I start out softer I cant seem to bring out the melody, and when I start out how I normally would, I get tired by the end.

Am I on the right track??

Sorry about the sloppy parts btw, recording is a lot more difficult than I thought it was. Also, I have no idea what happened to the last few seconds  :-\

Any feedback would be great!
Thanks

Hi carazy,  Ok here's one!  I have not played this etude but I can give you a general opinion.  I can tell you have a good grasp of how it should sound--the melody is mostly coming out as though you know where it's going.

I never quibble too much about mistakes, because I make many of them!  :)  In this case I hear a lot of them, which is causing muddiness in the arpeggios.  I know this is a heck of a hard piece, and the idea is to hear a wavelike continuum rather than specific notes--but nonetheless, approximations of the correct notes don't work because even a small disruption in the harmony throws a sort of "glitch" into the smoothness.

I would like to hear more rising and falling of dynamics here and there.  If you are getting tired, it may mean the piece is above your skill level at tempo, or maybe you are using some less-than-efficient positions, etc.  If you have a teacher, address the fatigue problem with him/her.

That said, I think you have a lot of talent and a musicality that will get this to the level you want it.  Keep up the good work!
Teresa

Dear carazymcmahon,

This is not a bad start considering it's you first etude.  I would slow down some and try to work on improving your accuracy.  Right now it sounds a bit mechanical and you don't want the final product to sound like an exercise, but rather like the beautiful piece of music that it is.  I would also say your left hand needs a little more work than your right hand.

I posted a recording of this etude a while back.  I also talked more in depth about the technique required to play this etude here https://pimpmypiano.com/Forum.htm under the "Compositions" section.  Keep working at it and you will continue to improve!

Cheers,
cherub

I'm still not able to access the forum of which you speak, cherub_rocker.

And I practiced slowly with a metronome today to pay for my crimes against the state.

I agree with TERESA_B comment. The structure is clear, now you can work on details and clearness, and surely you'll obtain good results! I too played and recorded this one as my first Chopin study, and I too probably will upload here. I think you have recorded in a very "honest"
way, without cuts, and let's consider that so is more difficult.....
All the best,
Sandro
