Musicians inspired by God
on: May 20, 2004, 08:53:39 PM
For the theists out there, what musicians have you heard play that make you feel, not merely sad or happy, but deeply religious or spiritual...

This question springs from having heard Yo Yo Ma with the Bach suites. I percieved a feeling of playing for eternity, beyond sadness or earthly things...

I dont know, Yo Yo rocks!

I also get this feeling from Claudio Arrau with Beethoven...
For a good laugh, check out my posts in the audition room, and tell me exactly how terrible they are :)

Hi there!

I get exactly the same feeling with Arrau playing Beethoven! Have you seen (or heard) the film of him playing Beethoven op.111? (this is a piece that I personally feel was inspired by God when written, it seems to have that eternal feeling...).

Hey, well, I just had a most profound musical experience today actually.  Though, it was not piano music.  I was listening to a piece called "Christus Vincet" (sp?) by James MacMillan (choral).  Absolutely and profoundly spiritual beyond anything I have ever heard.  Everywhere that I looked around me (I was driving in the car) things appeared as artwork, from the most vast observences, to the most detailed of what I could percieve.  I could see purpose everywhere and it's funny... mailboxes and garbage cans had a new look to them... they had purpose.  I felt a wash of deep gratitude for so many things.  Actually, it was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life to date, if not thee most.  The deepest I have ever felt life and love.

Hmmmm... I guess music is pretty cool  8)

if you care to stretch the term "musicians" into "composers", then almost without a doubt the greatest music inspired, and dedicated to, God is Bruckner's 9th symphony.

I find MacMilan considerably pompous and bloated beyond repair. He was fine as a young composer, but now he's become awfuly self-consciously profound.

I would also agree with the poster who mentioned Arrau's op. 111 on the EMI DVD.

For the Bach cello suites, try Fournier. Yo Yo is a bit of a joke.

When I hear long stretches of Scriabin, it puts me in an almost trancelike state.  I truly think he was inspired by something if not divine, than other worldly.  But, then, I'm sure the same can be said for all the great composers and creative geniuses throughout the ages.

Someone, somewhere recently (maybe here?) was talking about his spiritual chord that permeated all of his later works.  Anybody know what chord it is and any more detail on this theory.
