Mel Bonis...
on: September 21, 2008, 03:20:48 PM
I did a little quick search here on the name 'Mel Bonis' and I was a little surprised to find no link at all...  So I'm very glad to share a very beautiful discovery I just did ; a CD by Laurent Martin playing works for piano by 'Mel Bonis' --- Not the 'Pièces Pittoresques et Poétiques' but Impromptus, Préludes, Menuets etcetera...  The booklet of the CD of the year 2007 says that her works are 'actually' being reprinted by Furore at Kassel in Germany.  I'm looking forward to ask for it in our local musicshop.  In the meantime, it would be of course nice if someone happens to have some sheetmusic right now...
Anyways, really beautiful music.
Kindly.

The CD didn't contain music "for children", if one may say so...  But there was a "Romance Sans Paroles", maybe the one you posted in the "Six Pièces", I will try it out this evening. Anyway, while I'm still hoping for Préludes, Impromptus etcetera I'm thanking you already a lot for your post, Allthumbs.
Kindly.

There is a gigantic book published by Henry Lemoine.

Probably still available from Di Arezzo I would have thought.

I'm not (always) that clever or to-the-point to do a search on the internet.  For one reason or another I do not tend to buy stuff over the internet myself, (the local music-shop does it for me) and I just believed the booklet of the CD right away.  There have been editions of Leduc and Eschig.   Just went to the site of Di Arezzo, they have a huge catalogue, wow.  There was indeed some Mel Bonis, the 7 volumes of Furore, probably the edition of 2007.  Thanks for the tip, Thal.

Never heard of her - but found out her full name is Melanie.  Looking at her 'style' - she's pre-gershwin all the way.  Very creative.  Good stuff for piano students - especially sightreading and counting - but adding a little swing.

here's a blurb from 'presto' : https://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/news.php?date=2008-03-24

yes.  well, i watch the show 'monk' once in a while. curiously, it provokes a little interest in how it all works.  pianists are often chosen for work like this.  being naturally quiet and observant to details (sometimes).

It was indeed very clever of you to work out that someone called Mel was actually called Melanie.

Not really obvious.
