Biography on Brahms
on: October 01, 2008, 03:57:46 AM
Where can I find a very comprehensive biography of Brahms' life? I've been meaning to learn more about his personality, his relationship with the Schumanns, and even possibly his love life... :o

I've heard people say that there were "women in his life," some people even suggest he was in a relationship with Clara at one time and that he regularly enlisted the services of prostitutes but I would like some substantiation to those claims and not just heresay. :)

This is a very extensive biography about Brahms by Hans Gal, pupil of a close friend of Brahms, I enjoyed reading it. Not sure if it´s still in print...

It's well documented that he was madly in love with Clara when he first met her (alas, Robert was still alive at the time so it came to naught), and received plenty of attention from the opposite sex, which was often reciprocated. Hell he even considered marriage at one point. He also seemed to use brothels a lot, and was very popular among the "working" girls since he carried tons of extra cash around which he handed over freely. All this can be gleamed by reading Swafford's biography.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
