Need a suggestion for a piece to play at a wedding
on: October 26, 2008, 07:14:25 AM
Hey everyone! Okay so my sister is getting married in April and she wants me to play at her wedding.  I'm not gonna be doing the whole wedding because the church they're getting comes with an organist....which since I don't play organ well and don't know the wedding march, i'll just let him do.  But, I'm wanting a suggestion of a piece to play.  I think I'm playing before the wedding, kind of as a precursor.  I want a fairly light happy piece....maybe something like Claire de Lune? [Actually that wouldn't be such a bad idea....haha]
But, any suggestions? the piece would need to be not to incredibly difficult.. I can play pretty well....but no suggestions like a Chopin Ballade or Nocturne, I'm not quite there.
Okay I could probably do a Nocturne, but you get it.  Preferably no pieces above a level 6 or a low seven.
Note: NO CANON IN D. My sister has told me she doesn't want that....and I really don't like the piece much.  I appreciate the genius that went into making it, but I don't wanna bother perfecting playing it.

Edit: I was just told I'll probably be playing for 15-20 minutes before.  So I'll need a few pieces.  Claire De Lune will be my last one as decided by my sister, so now I need probably two or three more good ones.  Thanks!
Currently working on
Chopin: Waltz 34/2 in Am [polishing]
Debussy: Clair De Lune [paused currently]
Mozart: Sonata 5 K283 in G 1st movement [polishing]
Bach: Sinfonia 4 in Dm [halfway through]

How about Salut d'amour? A violin piece but there're transcriptions for solo piano, fairly easy to learn.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them.

Who is Salut d'amour by?  I haven't heard it so I'd want to look it up.
and more suggestions are still welcome. :].

Salut d'amour was composed by Elgar

Here's a violin/piano version

and attached is a transcription for solo piano (from the IMSLP)

How about the second movements from Mozart K330 or K545?   If you're doing Claire de Lune, I don't think these would be out of your reach.

Liszt TE in F major, #3 I think... sure it's a TE, but it's a beautiful piece, and is exponentially easier than most of his other etudes.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Try the following. They are at the level you can handle, and I played them at a friend's wedding:

Chopin nocturne op. 9 No. 2
Debussy Arabesque no. 1
Schumann Scenes of Childhood: "Of Foreign Lands and People" and "Reverie"

I was definitely thinking of 9/2.  I'll probably start that after auditions in January for scholarships.   Arabesque 1was another I was thinking, but I dunno. And I don't know the Schuman pieces, I'll look at them. Thanks!
Right now I was thinking of basically just playing the pieces I'm gonna use for auditions, except swap the waltz for Clair De Lune.

Maybe Debussy's Ballade? It shouldn't take too long to learn (unless you're stupid like me). Many slow movements from Mozart's sonatas are wonderful as well.
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Songs I've thought I would like played at my wedding are Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by Bach, and Simple Gifts from Appalachian Springs by Aaron Copeland.  You can easily find arrangements of both, for whatever your skill level is.

None of these pieces are good for an organ. I'm extremely confused. Will you be playing a piano?

Given that the thread was started 5 years ago, I suspect the wedding is over.

Pieces to play at a divorce or baptism may be more in order.

I just saw an open thread. Never really looked at the date :P

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
