Reputation system
on: November 04, 2008, 11:05:27 AM
We have now added the first part of a member reputation system for the forum.
The purpose is to encourage useful and qualitative posts and to make it less attractive to post useless posts.

In this first step there is a question in the bottom right corner of every post asking if the post is useful or not. When replying to this question the "Reputation" rating of the member who made the post will be modified.
Each member's reputation rating is shown in their profile if the value is 1 or higher.

[post modified to reflect changes in the reputation system]

and wouldn't it just end up being a popularity contest?

Do NOT change the reputation depending on whether you agree or not with the post content.

This is what will happen; it is what has happened on every other reputation system on any forum known to man.
so is this thing basically like your karma?

and wouldn't it just end up being a popularity contest?

This too.

In a few months, there will likely be heated arguments here about why the rep system is so horrible/wonderful asking for all kinds of changes/adjustments/other stuff. Don't say I didn't warn you!

In the sense that you can vote for old posts, yes, it's retroactive.

I really don't agree with this. It'll be blown out of proportion. People (that'll remain nameless) with vote for either their friends, stupid threads, etc. Others who deliberately cause trouble will just lower everyone's rating, etc.

We've done well without it, I just don't think this will be a good benefit to the site.

It's a feature that comes along with SMF forums, which is what this forum originates from.

Useless feature.  Over on Piano World it's abused continually.

It's fine as long as one's posts are neutral and polite, but say something controversial that just might offend some poor, sensitive soul and there go one's personal ratings.  (Well at least the user can disable them...)

Isn't a simple: "I agree with this post" or "Well done!" not avaliable to you? Do you have to resort to using numbers? I think it is a waste of time and I predict that it will be abused, even with the limit to it.

As I mentioned in the first post the purpose of this system is mainly to encourage useful and qualitative posts. There will probably be other aspects weighted in in the future which will be even more related to contribution with qualitative content and helpful replies rather than personal ratings.

At the moment your ratings are visable to all other members in your profile page (not available for non-logged-in visitors). The plan is to later on only display reputation rating or a reputation badge if it is higher than a certain value, for example only for the 20 members with highest reputation but for now we show the real time reputation value if the rating is 1 or higher. If your rating is 0 or negative a dash is displayed.

It might also be good to know that when you vote Yes/No for a post the vote is completely anonymous.

We are aware of the possible problems with member rating systems in general and will really put efforts into extending and modifying it to avoid any negative impact on the community.

I encourage you to really use the "Yes" link at the bottom right corner when you read an extra useful post.

One's reputation determined solely by others judging whether one's post is useful or not? The judging needs to be based upon more weight than that.  "Is this post useful?" is far too open a question upon which to hinge our "reputation", and as has already been mentioned, too easily abused.  I think it is too capricious a question for the purpose.

because there are some posts that people make that deserve recognition and some kind of reward.

Personally, i would not get excited if i got recognition for a post (not that that would happen), but i guess some people might.

These are only cyber points and are pretty meaningless. Its not as if you could trade them in for a weeks free shopping at Tesco's or a half hour lesson with Kissin.

I can't see the point of all this meself.

Although not always the case, I thought that the 'post count' feature was meant to refflect in a way the credibility of the poster, otherwise why does it exist?

Sure there will always be exceptions but if someone who has seemingly spent a lot of time reading and interacting in the forums responds it is usualy an indicator that they know a bit of what they preach.

There are some members that also use certain threads as "chat".

I have had to suspend the notification tool from some threads because of irrelevant distractions from serious nonsense.

Yet again, we are drifting from the point. I agree with shingo's point, the post count reflects how active you are as a member and therefore that could indicate that you are...useful.

Isn't the 2nd highest poster here...um...thal? lol
