Choosing beethoven sonata
on: December 29, 2008, 08:04:47 PM
Hello!

I need a beethoven sonata, after playing op 10/3.

I've thought three:

-Op 10/2 (F Major)
-Op 14/2 (G Major)
-Op 22 (Bb Major)

But I don't know what to play. I like three, but I can only play one, so I have to choose. What do you recommend me? Which is more impressive? Which is more difficult? I will probably play it in a competition, so I need something I can manage. I think the most underplayed is op 10/2, but well... I don't know. I hope your answers.

Thanks in advance!

Personally I think that if you have already played Op. 10/3 the F and G major sonatas you listed there are a bit below your level.

The Bb major I think is at around the same level as the D major one you played, however, of the early sonatas I find Op. 7 (Eb major), Op.2/2 (A major), and Op. 2/3 (C major) to be far more interesting than Op. 22

Of the most difficult, I would say that Op. 2/3 is the hardest, the rest are all around the same.

Op. 14 No. 2 is about 10 times easier than Op. 10 No. 3. Op. 10 no. 2 is probably also easier. So if you can manage op. 10 no. 3, I would stick with it. I'm not sure why you would want to learn op. 14 no. 2 or op.10 no.2, unless maybe you found op. 10 no. 3 too difficult? Personally I prefer op. 10 no. 3 to op.22, but I suppose op. 22 would work.

are you guys serious? 10/2 is not easy at all. I played it and in order to play the finalle really PRESTO you have to have a very good technique. not easy at all, it's a great sonata, and by the way the second part is very hard too- you have to try and give it the right "charachter" which is difficult, and i didn't manage to do it yet.

take the f major sonata. it has everything- a technically demanding finalle, beautifuly mature second part, and a great allegro. i love it.

i have never heard op.14 no.2 but i have heard op.22 and it was the worst sonata i have ever heard. so i would say op.10 no.2
