hobby/interest that has become an unhealthy habit
on: January 25, 2009, 01:38:40 PM
When do your hobbies/interests become unhealthy and what do you do about it?

For example you like coffee(or internet, being violent, online games, watching too much TV etc), but you became addicted to it that it endangers your health (or your schedule, relationships, etc)... what do you do to curb this habit?

In my case, well, I like reading random stuff like history books, reference materials, manga (japanese comics), literary stuff, magazines and the like... it's  good in a sense that I end up knowing more than what is expected of me. But at the same time it is unhealthy because when I know I have a task to finish, I procrastinate and go on with my reading. so, in a way reading become unhealthy during such times. like an excuse to escape.

how about you? have you experienced something similar?

for those who have children - how do you deal when your child has an unhealthy habit?

Same, but then it got boring and haven't been on one in years.
I must say now that at the moment I do spend a lot of time chatting on msn and watching tv in the evenings after college and that.

Reading as well but this has made me pedantic and irrational and to a Point where I won't talk to people and are rude to them because they don't share the same interest.

- hanging out on this forum
- going out for a bite to eat (although it is good exercise)
- for a time, watching piano and music videos on youtube
- for a time, reading all available material on piano and music

Books (fiction and manga) and video games? not really. I get sick of them soon enough. They are for me, healthy distractions that last just long enough to keep me refreshed. I think the most unhealthy habit for me is being obsessed with the problem at hand (ie. musical frustrations and/or feeling depressed). A break is in order, at least once a week.

I think I've become a bit too obsessed with classical music (not that classical music is a bad thing in itself). It makes my parents wonder. I say I want to go into science, but I spend more time on music than on science...
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Wolfi has been collecting cuckoo clocks for 30 years. To say it is an obsession is an understatement.

He is famous all over Switzerland and many people come to view his collection. However, they all leave before the hour strikes.

He is too humble to brag about this.

for those who have children - how do you deal when your child has an unhealthy habit?

I would say generally the rule would be as long as you are meeting your responsibilities (i.e piano, home/rent, food, bills, study, family) do what you like in your spare time.  If you are using your habits as an excuse to disassociate and ignore practical matters then that is when they become unhealthy (generally it is one of the signs of depression).  As for procrastination well I am sure we are all guilty of it at some time in our lives.  For a long time this was the rule for me, but had to stop when I could no longer pull all nighters.

In dealing with children it is a simple matter of putting your foot down.  The funny thing is I was not a mean person nor did I raise my voice much until I had children.  For the most part children are driven to what is the most entertaining thing to do at any given time and need to be taught how to handle responsibility.

As for coffee.  Drink up the day is young.

Shark spotting.

Five days ago, on this little bay I live on, a deep sea fisherman swam onto our beach with four, huge bleeding parrot fish that he had speared.  They were each about 3-feet long.  He and I were sitting in the surf checking them out, when I saw this huge black-fin reef shark coming at us.  They NEVER swim into our bay.  Ever.  They have tons of food outside the reef -- fat, juicy monk seals, etc.  But the bleeding parrot fish brought this one in.

We jumped out of the surf, dragging the fish with us onto the sand.  This shark, over six-feet long, came thrashing at us and actually partially beached itself.  Then it sort of exploded in a frenzy and threw itself back into the bay.  At the water's edge, the ocean is only about 2 1/2 feet deep, but this big shark was hanging out in that shallow water for over two hours.  Watching us.  Once in awhile it would circle around the bay, but it always came back.

While it was still doing this, a neighbor came down to the bay with his dog and the dog freaked out and jumped into the surf to get the shark!  We tried to get the dog out, but it was too late.  The shark got him.  One bite and he was gone.  it was awful.

The shark seemed to be gone by the next morning.  But all I do, now, is sit on the beach and stare at the ocean.  I haven't been back in the water in five days.

I'm obsessed with this shark.  It's too creepy.

General, you´ll have to call Richard Dreyfuss. And Roy Scheider, but I think he passed away recenty. They´ll take care of your shark. Anyway they´re scary animals, their eyes looks so evil.  :'(

Power lifting, this is a sport where the objective is to lift heavy weights, bench press, dead lift and squat with weight. It can be unhealthy because the temptation to take steroids ect ect is their, and if your not careful then you can do serious damage, some guz lift 700 Kg  :o :o.

What made you interested in power lifting?

What made you interested in power lifting?

Its a prgression from weight training which is similar, except with power lifting you can enter competition and you aim to lift as much as you can over a period of time. Un-like body building where its mainly how you look, with power lifting its how much weight you can lift, a test of strength, its good fun.

Its true steroid can effect job prospects because of its side effects.

Well, one day after a bit of a work out, my thigh muscle decided to detatch from my knee and move half way up my leg. I had to have operation to have it "welded back on", so no more powerlifting for me.

When i deadlifted 300kg, i was well over 100kg myself, so it was not that great.

I would not get involved in this Zheer, you might lose some of your flexibility.

Hahaha, no I'm a light weight, I wont ever be able to lift anything that would cause lasting damage, I just don't have the strength. plus I know when to stop.

Sorry to hear about the surgery, how painful was it ? and do you walk the same these days?

Zheer, you better be careful. It sounds quite addictive and dangerous.

But seriously, I can't imagine myself doing that.  :-\
How can carry something that weighs 100 kg when I'm only around 49 - 50 kg?
I already have enough troubles opening a gatorade bottle. How much more when lifting something twice my weight? o_____O

It is easier for a lighter person to lift 2 or 3 times their bodywieght.

With training you would easily be able to deadlift 100kg.
