What is your job?
on: June 13, 2004, 12:57:00 PM
Just wondering...outside of playing the piano, or being a student, do you have job? What type of work do you do? Thought it would be interesting to see what everyone did besides play the piano, that they get paid for!

I am a current student, but during summer and Christmas break when I come home I work doing basically data entry or other odd jobs for a tax auditor/consultant.
When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

I am a student (finishing Gr 11).  I make most of my money with scholarships from piano, piano performance, or accompaniment.  I also make a living by webdesign.  I also work during lunchtimes at my school as a cafeteria supervisor.  This summer, I am working at a summer camp in the Public Relations Department.

I'm studying piano at university (first year bachelor of music), but I'm also an architect. I finished my architecture degree last year and I'm working in a firm part-time.

Whenever I'm working though (like now) I'm always being naughty by spending way too much time on Piano Forum.

Hey Clare....don't feel to guilty. I'm at work right now myself. When I'm off, I'm usually so busy practicing I don't think to get on, but somehow I always manage to find time at work to visit the forum! I work 7pm till 730am 3 days a week so I work completely alone, and can visit the forum!

In addition to teaching, I am a substitute pianist at a reception hall for weddings, parties, etc. and I own a very small business, a bakery, which I started about two years ago.

This summer I'm helping a family friend in his pool cleaning business...

Sometimes I will need to clean a bunch of pools that belong to these big rental houses along the beach.
It's awesome because while cleaning the pools near the beach I get some sun and great views of the...uh...water...yeah water...  ;)

DonJuan....don't ever feel ashamed at working at McD's.
I no tons of people who worked there as either a "first job", part-time job, extra $$$ at Christmas job, etc. It may not be "fun"...but it IS good, honest work. Nothing wrong with that!!!! Better than saying you are without a job and living off unemployment >:( >:( >:(! I have a friend that started out at McD's they helped put him thru college and now he is a regional manager with them making in the 6 digits yearly! Not too bad!

And Tony.....glad to hear you'll be enjoying views of the water that much! Hope no pretty girls get in your way of a clear view! ;D ;D

k, Working at McDonalds is pretty close to slave labour.  They dont pay you enough for the hell you have to go through.  That grease- isnt just grease, it is SUPERGREASE :o and doesnt wash off in a single shower.  I had to put up with immature little tweens who dont understand the principle of changing the mop pail water ::).  Dont work at McDonalds, it is hell.  And not the kind of Hell you can make music about- I mean, you are knee deep in special sauce :P >:(, and it burns, ARGH!!OH GOD IT BURNS!!! :o :o

Do they use partially hydrogenated oils to fry the french fries?  I usually avoid this ingredient so if they do use it, I still have an excuse not to eat french fries at any fast food restaurant.

And DonJuan, Do you mean the McDs in the States or in Hong Kong?  I hear that Hong Kong is much better because the people treat the job with respect without adding the "special" sauce. ;D

Partially hydrogenated oil? I dont think they care that much about your well being.  For the Nuggets, Filets, and McChickens, it is VERY hydrogenated vegetable oil (probably palm oil, or something even worse.).  For the fries, they use lard.  It comes in a huge tub that we store under the deep fryer.  It isnt even refrigerated for the most part, but then again, what in the right mind would want to grow in it?

I worked at a McDonalds in Canada.  It was owned by a group of 16 year olds.  I have never been to a Hong Kong McD's.

Just realized I never answered my own question! I went from nursing to flight attendant to what I do now. I'm an Analyst. I work w/ programing on the Switches and call volumes. I have no idea how I ever got into this, except I was made an offer I couldn't refuse, and was able to work only 3 days a week, which meant I could take more piano lessons and practice much more.I've been here for not quite a year...but it's worth it!

Probably the worst job I've ever had....was in my "younger days" when I was taking a few extra courses at a Comm College, I needed alittle extra spending $$$. So I got a job as a taxi driver!!! I had only been in the state 3 days...didn't know where ANYTHING was, and was so scared I carried alittle plastic cap gun by my seat (it looked real). It was terrible. I was lost all the time. Somehow I still got good tips, but I think all the passengers felt sorry for me as I always ended up lost, frustrated and would start crying, they'd feel bad and give me a huge tip and say "it's okay honey". Hahaha....I forgot about that. It's been a
L O N G time ago....aaahhh  the stupid things we do in our youth!

Oh, okay, so I can eat the fries if I'm not scared of the carcinogens from frying potatoes.  Acrylimide is formed when those amino acids are changed due to high temperatures from frying.

Have a scare here:
https://www.mercola.com/2002/oct/16/carcinogens.htm

So which is worse?  Cancer or clogged arteries?  Both will kill you.  I figure that trans fatty acids are less worse as there are drugs that allow you to eat all the crap in the world but there isn't a drug for cancer yet.

I'm still unemployed.

Don't worry man, my 1st job was at DQ, would you like a bloody blizzard with that?

Yeah it licked in many ways, and the pay was minimum 5.90 CANADIAN PEOPLE!!!

I eventually did different jobs and built up my resume, and now thank god I'm an accounts payabe administrator (umm I take care of the amounts oweing to people we owe money to for the stuff and services we buy from them) at a major city attraction.  IT IS THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD (well at least for me)

I get my own PC, flat screen LCD monitor, free coffee and water yum! and I get tickets to hockey games and other stuff, yeah and I work in one of those "dilbert" cubicals and chat with co-workers...its the white collar job of its time!

I have the BEST job in the whole world, and I mean it--I love what I do!!  It's totally, completely "ME", it fits my personality to a T.  I work for the Pastoral Care Dep't of a local hospital.  I visit with people who are sick or facing surgery or even dying.  Some might wonder why on earth I do this.  But it's so "ME".  I never realized that I have true 'compassion' (not merely 'feeling sorry for someone' in those situations).  Maybe I knew, deep down, that I had it, I just never had a means to express it in a healthy way.  So, I love what I do!  I now think that I would like to be a hospice volunteer.

Sounds like a really nice cushy job!  How much do you rake in a year? (if you dont mind my asking) and how did you get the job? (University degrees, etc)

A years salary, enough to get me a decent used Yamaha grand, umm yeah thats rather bleak but it sure as hell not 5.90 per hour, by god.

I was a temporary data entry clerk for these guys but I worked my ass off and they also needed a full time position, so I was the dude that fit the bill.

Well my pay would be considered shitty for someone who was 40, but I'm like 19 and a position with salary pay instead of wage is so damn good these days, especially with all my other friends doing shitty jobs

Ohh! I have another terrible part-time job to list here: Panera Bread (St. Louis Bread Company). I *just* got out of that job after four months of trying to quit. Every Panera employee I've ever asked (fifteen people from four different states) has all told me that it was awful. Managers are jerks, pay is crap, hours are terrible. They are slave drivers!! Hello all,

I thought many times of asking that question without daring !

So, I am freelance in Information systems during the day and a mediocre pianist (and his audience  >:( ) early in the morning and sometimes late at night.

I do not see my life without a keyboard...!   ;D

I am trying to get a job as the organist/pianist at my church.  It pays really well-(about $70-125 a week depending on experience)  :o :o :o
I am also trying to get a job at the Barnes&Noble.
Next year, I'll be working at a sleepaway camp (not for the money though), but they'll give me free lifeguarding courses!  In the winter I am going to try to become an EMT but I may have to wait until the next summer...
