gould's art of fugue
on: May 01, 2009, 09:08:24 AM
I have just listened to Gould's recording of the Art of fugue and I found it great. I just wondered why he didn't complete the work. In my edition of the work, there are : Contrapunctus I-XIV and Canons in Hypodiapason, alla Decima, alla Duodecima, in Hypodiatessaron.

Gould doesn't play Contrapunctus 10, 12. He doesn't play Canon in Hypodiapason, Canon Per Augmentationem In Contrario Motu, Canon alla Decima (Contrapunto alla Terza).

Does anyone know why ? Thanks.

Your query sent me back to the liner notes for Gould's Art of Fugue "compilation".
It's mentioned that Gould had a notion to complete his organ version, but this was not realised owing to his physical concerns when playing the instrument.
I can't find a reference to his intentions as a completist with regards to his piano version,
but it was thought that Gould had intended to record the complete Bach keyboard works and he almost succeeded.
