The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more

Which Alkan piece do you think I should do first?

I have never played anything by him before and I am not that familiar with his music.

Hey there communist! I'm not sure of your level of proficiency - I went to the audition room to see if you've posted any recordings of your playing but couldn't find any. The Symphony is, in my opinion at least, a more difficult work than the Sonata. Another work that is alot of fun to play is the A minor Sonatine Op 61. It's a shorter work (still with 4 movements) but full of many more interesting figures than the forementioned works - as well as holding some formidably difficult passages.

If you're after a good concert piece, the Sonatine also holds up well.

If you still wish to just go with either of your options, I'd go with the Symphony.

Ian.

thank you for your reply. I have decided I will just wait for both of them. I will do the symphonie first but not now. I could play either of them so the difficulty is not that big of a deal.

HHHHHmmmmm there are many interesting Alkan's pieces to start with. They are all really lovely!
Take a look at:
a)Prelude No. 8 (The Song of the Mad Woman on the Sea Shore)->dark and beautiful
b)2 Petites Pièces, Op.60 rare and pleasant pieces
c)Barcarolle Opus 65 No 6
d)Alleluia Opus 25 both with nice melodies
The above stuff is easier than other works of Alkan so it is perfect to start with!
I really hope that this helped you!
