Thals Junk Pile
on: July 14, 2009, 09:34:56 PM
Every now and again when i do not have a big scanning project on, i start to scan my pile of old scores, thus preserving them for eternity.

My mother is now at her wits end with "that pile of old junk" and i can see her throwing them away, so i thought i had better get some digitalised and dump them in here.

My first effort is the L'Orage from Steibelt's Piano Concerto No 3 and is dedicated to Mr A Hinton in the hope that this might stimulate his interest in early 19th century charlatans. This piece was immensely popular in its day and was probably played by every amatuer in Europe.

I did already have a scan of this, but this 1820's print is nicely fingered and contains some alternatives. This has probably been out of print for 150 years, so i was glad to find an original.

Following scans will mostly consist of concertos, transcriptions and pieces that will irritate the average modernist.

I have some nice ones coming up for you Ronde.

I would love it if you recorded this Steibelt. You could bring it back to life after 150 years of neglect.

Who was this remark aimed at? I'm rather curious. By the way, I'm not irritated at all by this thread.

Familiar situation, even when with me it's this insanely huge CD/LP/book collection. That "complete wagner Operas" box arriving yesterday didn't help either...

Very nice job you're doing, btw!

In the long run, any words about music are less important than the music. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not worth talking to (Shostakovich)

Despite the occasional sour (and likely impulsive and misguided) comment on romantic music I might make, I still like (or appreciate) almost all of it and won't hesitate to take a look at anything you post here. Are you still posting things on that "boot-of-Thal's-car" thread at Pianophilia I remember from a few months back? I recall enjoying your little commentaries on some of those works.

I don't post on pianophilia any more old chap. The place only has a couple of people posting fresh scans and it is turning into recycle site.

Not even the owner can be bothered to log on and remove spam.

It's still occasionally really good for out-of-print Soviet scans and there's at least one thread dedicated to rare items that's continuously spoiled me rotten with good late-19th/early-20th-century pieces. The lack of a moderator is a bit troublesome sometimes, but it's still head and shoulders above other places like Gamingforce.

Poor old G E Griffin, completely forgotten now. Should have changed his name to Griffinov or Griffowitz, like Eli Parish did.

He was a pupil of JB Cramer, rival of Field and friend of Kalkbrenner. Very much admired in his day and like many composers of that time, he entered a Scottish Air into his concerto to appeal to the barbarians.

Yeh, Malcolm is a gem, but a complete nutter when it comes to old scores.

He ordered all the interesting Soviet scores from the latest Dan Fog catalogue within about an hour of receiving it.

Wonderful offering! Can we find a recording, or expect one anytime soon?
