RCM 10 Repertoire Selection!
on: July 27, 2009, 08:36:55 PM
Why hello there. Hope this is in the right forum :)

I'm just picking out pieces for my gr. 10 RCM exam, and I was wondering if someone has anything to say for picking either Schumann's Intermezzo from Fasschingschwank aus Wien, or Chopin's Waltz op. 34 no. 1 (A flat major)

Currently, my pieces look like this:

List A -- Prelude & Fugue in C- book 2 -- Bach

List B -- Pathetique, 1st and 2nd mvts. -- Beethoven

List C -- Intermezzo or Waltz -- Schumann/Chopin

List D -- Clair de Lune -- Debussy

List E -- Have no idea.

For my studies I've picked out Etude-Tableau in g minor by Rachmaninoff as one, not sure yet what the other will be.

Oh and thought I'd just say, gr 9. I picked out a Chopin nocturne, and for my ARCT I might choose Fantasie Impromptu for my List C, so if I pick the waltz I may be doing three Chopin years :P

Looks good so far. Here are a couple of suggestions.

List E: Messiaen - Plainte calme

Second study: Chopin - Op. posth., Étude No.2 in Ab major (Trois nouvelles études)

List B -- Pathetique, 1st and 2nd mvts. -- Beethoven

So your only playing 2/3's of a Sonata??? Sounds a bit odd... isn't it worth playing the full thing???

They actually bumped the entire sonata for an ARCT exam; Grade 10 it's either a full sonata of a reasonably short length (a few Haydn's are quite short) or 2 mvmts from a longer sonata.

For List E I'd suggest a few:
Prokofiev - March for the Love of Three Oranges
Southam - Bagatelles #2 and #4
Somers - Strangeness of Heart (I ended up doing this one, because I also chose the Pathetique first two movements and the Rach etude, and a few other beastly grd 10 pieces, and the Somers is definitely the easiest list E)
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Yeah, I can learn the 3rd movement on my own if I want but I can't do the entire sonata for the exam --> Less work, but I kind of would like to learn it all. Like nanabush said, it used to be grade 10 but they revised the syllabus a year ago and now it's ARCT.

Thanks for the List E suggestions, I'll check them out... As for List C I'm leaning towards the waltz right now but I can always change my mind.

Hi Pianorama

I finished my RCM 10 Exam just a few weeks back, and I played the following:

Bach - Prelude & Fugue in D

Mozart - Sonata in E flat

Chopin - Waltz in E minor

Debussy - Claire de Lune

Tsitaros - Snow Games

Etude #1 - Haberbier - Serenade in D major
Etude #2 - Duvernoy - Study in C major

Good luck on your exam !!!

Nice choices! Always liked the Messiaen and the last 3 Chopin Etudes.
...and she disappeared from view while playing the Agatha Christie Fugue...

Thanks, I play the Messiaen piece and I've just started to work on the Chopin piece.
