Friedrich Nietzsche and Music
on: August 20, 2009, 08:09:28 AM
Suddenly got interested with this one. I never thought Friedrich Nietzsche to be a composer. I knew him as a famous German philosopher, who relatively has great influence on religion, morality, philosophy, and science. I haven't recognized him as a composer, particularly of piano music, not as much until I got my free track today for this week from classicsonline.com where his music is featured. Then I came across an interesting site: https://www.virtusens.de/walther/musik_eng.htm

Any thoughts about Nietzsche and his music?

I was surprised as well when I found one of his pieces in YouTube, but I haven't listened to it with enough attention to say much.

A few pieces are on IMSLP, I think. I played one, once, for fun, I thought it was very pretty.

He was by no means a good composer, like many other people who were writers and tried out composition. Look up compositions by Leo Tolstoy, Theodor Adorno, and Federico García Lorca's compositions for comparison. It's interesting, however, to see someone in a different profession try out composition.
