very expensive CD, but why?
on: August 28, 2009, 03:18:37 AM
I was just looking at a movie soundtrack on Amazon.  Title remains nameless to protect the innocent.  ::)  Not a hugely well-known movie.  The composer was imitating another modern classical composer.

And the CD is about $100.  The DVD of the movie is only about $5.

Even if the music by itself is very popular, I would think that would put it in the $15 range.  And if it wasn't popular, I would think it would be very cheap just so the businesses could unload the material.  But there are at least thirty places selling it.

I'm mystified.  It was never a popular movie.  It's not a big comeback movie.  Why would there be so many of the soundtracks out there, but at such a high price?  It's not an import either.

So of course now I want one too.  ::)

Now you got my curiosity...what was the movie?   Sometimes the composer may have rights to a certain price for his music.  I don't know.  The movie producers probably borrowed this music for the movie.  Just a guess....

best wishes,

Presumably that CD is discontinued and therefore secondhand. So you need to remember the mantra of the secondhand record (or indeed book) dealer - 'It may not be any good, but my God it's rare'.

And the prices have fluctuated.  Now it's at $30, but I found and ordered one somewhere else for $10.  Backordered.  I'll see if they're shipping estimate of two months actually turns out to be true.  Hope the CD is worth it.

Well, what movie is it? I might be able to find it somewhere for you (I know people in the film score business)?

It's just a standard CD.

This is a classical music forum.  I can't admit to listening to it.   :-X

Well, then your help ends here. I could have helped you get it, but I guess you don't want it that much. And besides, people here admit to liking Richard Clayderman. This can't be any worse.

Argh, but I still want to know! I'm a sucker for curiosity. You can tell me privately if you want. I am taking a class on film scoring this semester, so my interest is especially piqued.

I guess Bob is just too ashamed. I at least have a reason to be curious. What's your excuse, thal and go?

I don't think Bob is too ashamed.  He just has his reasons.   ;)

This is a common problem on Amazon. They have some sort of automatic algorithm that prices things according to perceived supply and demand, whether or not it's realistic. It's been driving people crazy.

And the prices fluctuate constantly. I was looking for a math book on the group theory of Rubik's Cube, which I wanted to read just for fun. It was $270, and the book is maybe 10 years old. A few weeks later it was $65. Go figure.
