Free Piano Lesson Advertising
on: October 04, 2009, 12:17:06 AM
Over the past 2 weeks for fun I have been trying to get a new student through internet advertising (I have been using an Aussie one called Gumtree). It costs me nothing but a few of minutes of my time posting the adverts. I recieved about 20 emails over the last 2 weeks expressing interest, most of course are time wasters or other teachers just wanting to check on the competition. However I have now 2 new students.

Doing this experiment has made me realize that people who start out teaching could in fact use free advertising on the internet as a viable option to get going! The only cost is the time spent replying to emails.

There are quite a lot of free advertising online, I know Craigslist is a very popular one, so if you where to advertise on all free online classifieds I am sure you could at the end of the year have so many students you don't know what to do!

Exciting stuff this technology thing :)

For me, word of mouth and flyers work best.

Craigslist was okay at first but a few months ago, all I got was a bunch
of spam emails and so I quit doing that.

If all I have to do is filter through spam mails (I only got 1 out of 50 odd so far) and reply to people who just want to know how much you charge and that is it, it is not much of my time wasted. The initial reply to the emails is usually a copy/paste task. If someone said to you, all you must do is go through 100 emails, and if you do this you will have 10 new weekly students, that is a pretty good deal if you ask me.

I don't think we want to try to find out a single way which works best to recruit students. It is always good to advertise in as many ways as possible to get yourself heard out there (that is if you are looking to expand your student base more so than what you already are doing).

Now 3 weeks have past and I have 4 new students, 2 more that want to meet up for interviews, plus the manager of a private music school is meeting with me next week wanting to talk with me about teaching at their school for 1 day a week next term. Pretty good stuff for sitting on my ass.

I have used Craigslist to advertise for piano lessons. It DOES result in some scam emails, but I have gained several really good students as well, so my personal opinion is....it's free, do it and be smart about it  :)

Any local bulletin boards or other music teachers -- Some teachers keep lists of who's teaching private lessons in the area.
