Perichetti---Piano Sonatas
on: November 12, 2009, 01:51:05 AM
Greetings---I have just heard the 3rd Sonata of Perichetti---enjoyed it :). Are there good recordings of the Sonatas/piano works. I have used his "little Piano Book" with my students. Are there other Sonatas by him i should consider learning. Thanks! ;)

His name is spelled Persichetti. All of his piano sonatas have been recorded by Geoffrey Burleson. The piano sonatas offer the best insight into the different aspects of his compositional style. He has some small poems for piano, but they are rather weak next to the sonatas. The Burleson set is the only complete one out there. The 3rd piano sonata has had a few recordings (notably by David Allen Wehr), but the rest have been neglected, until Burleson's set. This is mostly because this one is the best, from a purely musical perspective. With many of the other ones you get some interesting compositional devices, but not always much great music to go along with it. However, you may feel differently. Just go through the scores and recordings to see if you find any gems.

Off topic, but thanks for kicking my brain in gear, as I've been confussing Tchrepnin (and possibly others) with Persecutti (sp?:)) - meaning that between my pre-teen years and mid-30's I kept returning to the same Hungarian piano teacher, who suggested Prescetitti (sp?) more than thrice, yet after just a short intro I was drawn back toward Bartok.

Please understand that I'm not making fun of the composer you are asking about (I just don't know how to spell the name), and have, for many years wondered what his best piano works were. Hopefully they were more purely musical than the unfortunate examples (yet certainly well conceived) that I ever ran into when I was a lad.

So if you find something remarkable, please pass it on...

Haha, read my post. I not only offer a few suggestions, but I also clarified how to spell his name. And, by the way, I would say that Alexander Tcherepnin (I would assume this is the family member you are referring to [rather than Ivan or Nikolai]) and Persichetti are nothing alike.

Ah, yes, the correct spelling was almost in front of me. And despite my confusion of names, I do now realize Alex Tcherepnin and Vince Persichetti are completely different. The confusion began when I was quite young and kind of stuck with me until recently. ::)
