Help please! Pieces audition conservatory
on: December 29, 2009, 12:03:37 PM
Hey!  ;D

I'm doing audition for the conservatory in Arnhem (the Netherlands) in about 6 months.
I would like to have some opinions of you guys on which pieces I could play.

I have to play:
- 2 etudes (Both different from character, tempo and technique.. Like etudes by Czerny: opus 740 & Cramer-Blow: 60 Ausgewählthe Etüden.. That level)
- A two- or three-part Invention by Bach
- A sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
- And 2 other pieces (like a Nocturne by Chopin, Lieder Ohne Worte by Mendelssohn.. etc.)

Could you give me some ideas? Which pieces would be impressive?
(I'm sorry for any mistakes, my English isn't that good  :D)

Thanks!  ;D

Have you played anything like that before? Then start playing it again.  And I really think your teacher knows about which pieces you should play, way more than any forum.
So ask hem

Which pieces would be impressive?

I agree with the poster above me - what did your teacher advise?

That having been said, whatever you choose will be impressive if you deliver it thoroughly crafted at a high artistic level.  Why don't you read through some of the collections in question to see which pieces you like the most?

Best wishes,

I agree with the above posts, you should ask your teacher. And any pieces you have been playing that meet the requirements for the audition should be the pieces you play. Instead of learning new pieces. I still have some suggestions:

Invention 2, 6, or 9. These three are the ones that are usually played slowly. "A slow Bach piece is more impressive than a fast one," my teacher once said.

From Haydn, I like Piano Sonata No. 45 Hob.XVI: 30 in A major. For Mozart, Sonata 7, 9, 12, or 14. The more popular sonatas by Mozart (8, 10, 11, 13, 16) probably aren't such a good idea for a conservatory audition. You would have to play these incredibly well to impress the judges, since they're so common in performances. I might be wrong though.

Good luck. Ü

And of course, there is nothing wrong with doing so...   ;)

Haha! Of course. I'm just saying, if you have to play a Mozart sonata, play one of the least played sonatas. Sonata 15 I've noticed is an uncommon choice for auditions. But sonatas 8 and 16 are played so much, that to make the judges even remotely interested would take a lot of skill. :P

Thanks for all the comments  ;D

Tea cup, I like your suggestions! I love sonata no. 14 by Mozart!
You have any ideas for a Beethoven sonata? I just started 2 weeks ago with op. 49 no.1 and no. 2.. They're pretty easy, but I like them :D I guess it's not a great idea to play it for the audition, though.

Tomorrow I'll ask one of my teachers what he thinks is best for me, but I'm just asking you all for suggestions ;) It's not like I'd definitely play them all :P

Any comments are always welcome  :)

I think that for your 'own choice' piece you might consider learning an item of local repertoire - ie something from the Dutch piano repertoire.  I'm sure that would be well received by the 'jury'.  For example, you could look at piano music by Julius Röntgen (he is out of copyright, and some of his music can be found on the net - I have put a video of one piece on my YouTube channel, PSearPianist), Willem Pijper etc.  You could also see who is, or has been on the composition staff of the Arnhem Conservatory and see if you can play something by one of them.  I think you would really stand out in the crowd if you showed that sort of interest in the institution.

Chopin #12 op.25

Bach

Any inventions would work. They are great pieces.

sonata

try Haydn,Sonata in B-flat major,Hob 16/2

choice pieces

-one of those could be a local composer
-2nd piece could be an american composer of 20th and 21st century

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I decided to do the audition next year, though.
I want to be ready for it and right now, I don't feel like I am.
Any suggestions are always welcome!
Because I still have to do the audition :D
Maybe some modern classical?

Which pieces are in your repertoire at the moment, and which does your teacher advise?

Hello!  ;D  I want to help you with your repertoire.
1.Etudes: Dependes on your technique.
Czerny op.740- one etude from this set (they are all difficult and have technical problems often found in complex musical works).
 Chopin- one of both sets.
Liszt-one transcendental etude or one etude in exercises op.1.
  2. Sonatas.
     Beethoven (all sonatas excepting op.2 no.1, op.49 and op.79)
     Mozart ( all sonatas excepting k 545)
     Haydn (hob 16 no.1-17)
 3. A piece by Bach
A prelude and fugue- 3 voices.
The inventions are too easy for a conservatory audition.
 4. A romantism piece
    S. Rachmaninoff- op.3  8)(It is hard to say but this set is too easy), op.23 and op.32 Preludes (2 preludes), Corelli Variations.
Chopin- Ballades, Scherzos, Rondos, Impromptus, Polonaises.
Other pieces by Mendelssohn, Schumann,Schubert,Alkan, Albeniz,Grieg, Alkan, Scriabin, Brahms, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky and other.
5.Modernist composers like Ravel, Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky,Prokofiev and other.
6.A concerto by Haydn, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Schumann, Grieg, Brahms, Prokofiev. :o (if you don t play a sonata and you want something more challenging).
Hope this will help you.  ;D

Current repertoire:
Bach Toccata in E minor
Beethoven Sonata op.110
Rachmaninov Corelli Variations
Liszt Paganini Etudes No.2 and 6.
Strauss Burlesque in d minor, Brahms piano concerto No.2.
