Rachmaninoff Prelude op. 23 no. 5 and 6
on: July 05, 2004, 10:30:15 PM
I'm probably going to be playing both of these pieces... (no. 6 first) along with finishing the Waldstein. How difficult are these pieces... like are they as difficult as Chopin etudes? I know the op.23 no.9 is much more difficult than any Chopin etude... but just how difficult is op.23 no.5? I'm trying to figure out what i should expect from it. = X. And if you got tips for either of these preludes... that'd be sweet. = )

They are at level 8-9 on a scale of 10.
Chopin etudes are level 8-10

their not 8-9 out of 10!!! i played no 5 in 7th grade
tips for no 5 b/c i play it... 1) theres an incredible amount of emotion written in by rachmaninoff that most dont see 2) dont get carried away with the ending, it cost me a competition and a trip to state :[ im getting there this year for sure
3) bring out the melody a lot and in the middle section bring out the tenor melody its in the left hand ull find it its absolutely beautiful but easily overlooked when sight reading it
4) dont screw up

If Rachmaninov Prelude Op 23 No 5 is at 8-9, I guess I should have begun Rach3 a long time ago, as I played Prelude in Gm when I was 14...and it was 'Kjempeflott' (which means 'Great') (quote from the judges).

The prelude should be about 5...but then again, Liszt Rhapsodies are at 6....hmm...You should provide a larger scale
