Beethoven Sonata
on: April 01, 2010, 06:39:54 PM
I am looking for a slow movement from Beethoven's early sonatas (before op.49) to play for next year.

For a competition (in about 11months) I will need to play 2 movements (not neccesarily from the same work) that are of contrasting styles.

For the fast movement, I have chosen Sonata n.18 op.31 No.3 (Presto con fuoco) so I am wondering if you guys have any suggestions for the other one...

I suggest the slow movement from either Op. 10 nº1, or the slow movement from sonata 7 (Op. 10 nº3). Both of these movements contrast the playful mood of the Presto I think.

Not so difficult: Op. 10 No. 2, 2nd movement
Very difficult: Op. 22, 2nd movement

But if it's two pieces of contrasting styles, wouldn't it mean two different eras? (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th century) or is it a Beethoven competition?

Hmm, interesting choices.

And yes, it is, the competition rules are 2 Mvmts from Beethoven Sonatas Op.49 and earlier.

You can chose the second movement of sonata no 8 Pathetique. It is slow.

2nd movement of op.2 no.3 is great and not that hard

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
