Ignore list
on: May 23, 2010, 04:45:01 PM
Nils,

Is it possible to have an ignore list?

For example, if you do not want to see any posts from users who spam a lot.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

LOL!

I'm not laughing at you, by the way; it's just I have a few ideas of whom you may be talking about. None of the forums I have circulated had this feature, but you never know. That would be an interesting feature indeed.

On the contrary, this forum and Piano Society are the only ones I've ever seen that don't have an ignore feature that blocks public posts. Virtually all have the ability to block PMs.

BTW, Piano World has an ignore feature. ;)

Not at lot of use though - a poster can say the most offensive things about you and you're totally unaware.  For the very stoical I think.  What would work is an enforced ignore on both parties.

Isn't Spam a Lot a musical?  I think you mean flame (which is different from simply disagreeing with you!).

What use is an offensive remark if the other person never finds out about it? I would really like to see this feature implemented, for I would get some great use out of it.

And I really hope Nils is reading this. It seems he only responds to a quarter of the threads on the support forum. I guess it's what happens when you only have one and a half admins/mods (sorry Henrik, but you just are never here).

So, anonymity aside, if someone's shouting offensive remarks off the roof tops about you that's OK so long as you don't know?  You're a stoic indeed!

I inquired publicly about an Ignore List feature just a couple of months ago right here in this sub-forum.  My thread was a non-starter, but maybe this one will have more traction.

Unfortunately, though, this is a forum in which features are being progressively eliminated (e.g., the chat room, the options to change the forum's appearance from the blindness-inducing white text on dark background).  It's almost as though administration is purposefully winding things down here, so I wouldn't pin much hope on upgrades or new capabilities being implemented.

There's a thread here about that, too.  I posted a remedy for Firefox users via an add-on.  I'm so used to it now that I shuddered to see my old screenshot of how the forum looks by default to most everyone else.

Black Background-White Letters

I still think it's odd that lack of use is cited as a justification for removal of options when fewer options for users can be predicted to result in fewer users.  (It reminds me of how the streetcar systems in many U.S. cities were dismantled years ago; service was degraded such that significant ridership was lost, and then the reduced patronage was used to justify eliminating lines entirely.)

I've just given up Firefox - it's too big, gone over to Opera, really like it.  Know of any add-ons anyone?

Bingo!  The offense is rendered moot!

If spammers thrive on kicking up dirt I can see how this feature would be offensive to them.

Just to clarify, isn't the customization in that link is for an administrator to deploy rather than end users like us?

I don't understand the reference to spam and spammers.

There are certain peoples posts I do not read.

I do not need some button to press to do it for me.

That sounds grand.  I'm learning to do the same thing.

It sounds like this issue doesn't affect you at all, so it shouldn't matter if others would like such a "button" for such a purpose.

Yes it is.  Thus such a solution would be something Nils has to implement.

Well dang, thanks for finding it and mentioning it here!  I hope Nils sees this and will consider it (though, in my opinion, the restoration of options for other "skins" shouild be an even more important priority).

Like I said, this is most likely because there is really only one person running the show here, which is not smart when you have many users to oversee and serve. Perhaps the admin has had a more busy life lately, so is purposefully making this place lighter to make it easier to run. If more admins were hired, or if mods were added (there are none right now), there could be more people available to serve our needs and requests. Also, there would be more people to read the support forum (like I said, it seems that only a quarter of these topics get a response).

Nils,

It would be technically possible to activate such a feature but we have opted for not having it in this forum. While it could seem handy for an individual member to block all posts by certain members this may not be the optimal long term solution in order to promote a good climate for discussions. Instead we ask you to make use of the "Report to moderator" link at the bottom right of each post as soon as an offensive or for any other reason problematic post occurs and we will try to solve the problem itself.
