Problem....
on: July 17, 2004, 07:31:04 PM
So, I have a Casio WK-1800 feather touch keyboard and YES I know I have to change it.
Well, I cant make up my mind, Ill get an upright in the price range of 2k to 3k but I have to wait 4 months approx. Now, once I have it I will have restrictions on play time which will severly affect my practice hours (5 hours). What I was planning to do was mix the piano with the feather touch I have now, do techique and scales in the actual piano but practice reading and learning pieces on the other one.
Now if I were to get a digital I would get it now (which is important because I feel the strain in my techique already) but I understand an acoustic piano is better than digital and frankly I´m tired of playing on keyboards.
So what would you do? Should I eat my pride and go for digital or get my way with a piano?

A good digital is generally preferred over a bad acoustic. It therefore depends on the upright you have chosen. It is best to familiarize yourself with good digitals and compare. You won't wreck your technique with a good digital. On the other hand, you may not be able to acquire certain techniques that an acoustic requires, simply because a digital doesn't react like an acoustic. That goes for uprighs too. They are different from grands, so you won't experience the full gamut that grands can offer. And then, there are sounds and levels of control that you only get on the highest-quality grands. There are always compromises, and you will have to chose for yourself what you are willing to give up. Of course, digitals have all kinds of features that no acoustic has. Prioritize!

what's the problem?  do you have picky family members that demand silence?

It sounds like you will be better suited to a highend Digital.  You can get a really nice one for 2-3K, your budget on the upright.  Nowadays, Some digitals feel quite similar to uprights, and you will be able to get one for your price range.  bonus- never has to be tuned, and you can practice at 2 in the morning with earphones!
