on: October 06, 2010, 07:44:44 PM
I'm going to start learning Jazz and I need a Piano before i start lessons... I will probably buy a digital piano can anybody tell me some good/decent ones ( I would prefer one that would also allow me to play classical pieces ) ??

btw: I found a used yamaha p 60 for 350 euros that looks really cool but I don't know if its good or if the price is good or if it will be able to play classical music .. what do you think ??

I would apreciate some Quick responses because I need to buy it still this week cause the lessons start in a couple of days :S ...

Hi there. I would recommend the Yamaha P85 digital piano. I was looking for a digital piano as well and I after some research I felt that the P85 was a good choice. It is not too expensive, looks great and has great sound quality. I found this site that gave really good information on it. It mentions that it is currently sold for about $450 at Amazon. I think for what its worth, it would be probably better to get the Yamaha P85 for $450 instead of the older Yamaha 60 for 350 euros. You can read more about it here - Yamaha P85 Digital Piano
Hope that helps and good luck!

Try and get the odd hour on a real piano too. Many colleges have small music practise rooms that usually have a well maintained piano in.

I bought a cheapo psr something for 35 pounds off a friend around 1992. no touch sensitivity, no weighted keys. Very light. great for practising on the move with headphones. Use ironing board a keyboard stand. Will get you going and learning chords from a guitar book/youtube. I then bought a post 1920 overstrung upright from Oxfam Furniture shop for 15 pounds. 2 New hammer shafts made from dowel from B&Q. Tuned using socket set & guitar tuner. Delivered by passing coal lorry I flagged down, for 6 quid. I managed to sell on and cover costs when I moved on.

You are considering Second hand. That Stageperformer is expensive new. Cost is an issue. It has lots of featured you don't need, that will distract from playing, that can be added with a sound processor box or midi PC. It looks more of an all-in-1 for schools.

1) Any Yamaha Keyboard 3/4 size or bigger costing < 100 euro second hand. Just get started.
2) Any s/h Roland, Korg or Yamaha weighted keyboard with velocity sensitivity and midi.
3) Any New velocity sensitive Yamaha in your price range.

I have now a Roland HP 307-RW (2.595 Euros 21%IVA included) and it seems very good for a digital. Good sound, good touch (althow a little heavy)... Expensive but very good. It mimics a true grand.
