my desired repertoire
on: October 07, 2010, 03:21:16 PM
As an amateur with a heavy emphasis on improvisation, I finally realized the other day I simply have to prioritize. I decided to make a list of all the pieces that I may regret never learning, here they are (some of them I've already played, so this is really my desired "final repertoire" so to speak):

Bach

WTC Prelude in B minor
Gigue from French Suite in G major
French Suite in D minor, movement 3
Goldberg Variations no. 25
Aria from Goldberg Variations
WTC Prelude & Fugue in C# major
WTC Prelude & Fugue in C minor
Sinfonia no. 11 in G minor
Air from Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, piano transcription

Beethoven

Tempest 3rd mvt.
Sonata no. 13, opus 27, mvt 2 in c minor
Waldstein 1st mvt.
Pathetique all mvts
Moonlight Sonata 1st. and 3rd mvts

Chopin

Etude no. 12 in C minor, opus 25
Etude no. 1 in A-flat major, opus 25
Scherzo no. 2 in B-flat minor, opus 31.
Scherzo no. 3 in C-sharp minor, opus 39
Nocturne in E-minor, opus 72
Nocturne in C# minor, posthumous
Nocturne no. 1 in B-flat minor
Nocturne no. 2 in E-flat major
Waltz in C# minor, opus 64, no 2.
Prelude no. 1 in C-major, opus 28
Prelude no. 13 in F# major opus 28
Prelude no. 25 in C# minor, opus 45
Fantasy Impromptu

Debussy

Claire de Lune
Arabesque

Scriabin
Etude opus 8 No. 12 in D# minor
Etude opus 42 No. 5 in C# minor

Rachmaninoff

Prelude in B-minor
Prelude in G-major
Prelude in D major
Etude in E-flat minor, opus 39 no. 5
Etude in C minor, opus 39 no. 1
Elegy in E-flat minor
Prelude in C# minor

Schubert

Impromptu in C-minor (or is it e-flat major)
Impromptu in G-flat major
Impromptu in A-flat major
Sonata D960 in B-flat, 1st mvt

Schumann

Fantasia in C major 1st and 3rd mvts

Liszt
Liebestraum

...That's a pretty modest desired repertoire wouldn't you say? If I keep a steady pace I expect this list to take me anywhere from 5 to 10 years to learn well (enough for me to enjoy in my living room). This allows for many spaces occupied by intense periods of creating my own music. When it got right down to it I found it pretty easy to pick "favorite" pieces by each of those composers. I tried but couldn't think of anything by mozart that I'd regret never learning. Two fantasias in minor keys almost made the list.

If you are like me (and hopefully you are not), you will never complete any of them as some nice piece always comes up to divert the attention.
