I feel like my teacher is holding me back!!
on: October 17, 2010, 01:34:33 AM
I have been playing the piano for 9 years, and am a pretty advanced student. I love the piano, and practice for 2 - 4 hours a day.
The only problem is that all of the pieces my teacher assigns to me are too easy, or at least I think so. I have only been taking lessons from this teacher for about 2 months. Before this teacher, I was learning pieces like Chopin nocturnes and Schubert impromptus and finishing them in a week. With this teacher, I memorized the Brahms Intermezzo in A major, op 118, no 2 in two weeks. I am currently working on the Beethoven sonata in G major, op. 14, no. 2 and have memorized and brougt up to tempo the entire first movement in two weeks also. I'm working on the second movement, and already have two pages memorized.
But I want to work on pieces that take me longer to memorize and are more techinically challenging! All the pieces I have worked on so far weren't at all hard for me; maybe tricky in a few measures, but not by any means difficult. I'm starting to get bored with all these easier pieces, and I want to tackle Chopin's Polonaise in A major (the Heroic Polonaise), and some Scriabin Preludes too. Does anyone here think that these would be too difficult for me? And how should I go about asking my teacher?
Thanks

Why don't you post something in the audition room? How old are you?
Even after nine years, learning "easy" Beethoven and some Brahms intermezzi, can only do you good. I might agree that ONE piece - slightly out of your reach - is always good to have in your practise time. But I think your teacher sounds quite right in re-inforcing your technical and musical foundation.

Well from what I hear it sounds like you are a very talented and motivated individual. Maybe what you should do is work at perfecting all assigned pieces, do the things your teacher tells you and show openness to the things they suggest.(This will show willingness and eagerness). Then, to build your foundation and make things a little more exciting , try jumping the gun so to speak. If you have an idea of something you are dying to learn to play, maybe try looking into getting some of the sheets and taking the time to investigate the more involved levels further. Teachers love it when you show initiative. Show up with a long list of the things you want to learn (physical technique and special pieces) and a detailed action plan. Tell your teacher you are willing to work hard. Show them that you can do it. (Learn to play something with a musical capability that will make them think!) Teachers love this ! As for the asking part , I would definitely recommend being open and honest with your teacher. Tell them your goals and aspirations. If they are good, they will help YOU be YOUR very best. Often times in learning the cycle goes:
Learn- Push really hard- Ease up-Learn -Push really hard - Ease Up
In this way the changing pace helps us to reach our full potential. Think of musc as physical exercise. Never stop challenging yourself or pushing yourself to be the best you can be..Always believe..
~ I hope all goes well. Let me know how things turn out. All the best.~
