Repertoire Advice
on: December 29, 2010, 07:45:04 PM
Hello everyone!

I am a college freshman majoring in piano performance and I am going into my second semester.  I am really wanting some help on repertoire selection.  Last semester I played the Mozart Sonata in G Major K.283, Debussy Sunken Cathedral Prelude, Mendelssohn Songs Without Words No. 26 and 37.  I have also played Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata, Liszt's Liebestraume, and numerous Chopin Etudes in the past.

I am looking for advice on which Prokofiev Sonata and Liszt piece to select for next semester.  I really like playing fast exciting music but I want it to be within my reach of what I can play.  Any suggestions would be great for those two! Thanks!

Well, what does your teacher recommend?  The prokofiev 3rd sonata is a great introduction to his music, and not exceedingly difficult.

I agree with Birba, the Prokofiev 3rd is a great start.  Jumping straight into the 6th or 7th sonatas would not be a great idea.

Also take a look at his Visions Fugitives.  They're all great little numbers if you don't want to commit to a full sonata.

Thank you all for the advice.  I have played through some of the Vision Fugitives and they are defintely a good way to get into his music.  I finally ended up picking something completely different in Ravel's Sonatine.  And I also went with Liszt Consolation No. 3.  But thanks for the advice!

If you never play Prokofiev you can start play piano sonate no.2. I prefer Pletnev performance and I think that this sonate is amazing.
Liszt ... maybe try to play Rigoletto paraphrase ;)
Now playing:
Prokofiev - Sonate in d-minor op. 14
Bach/Busoni - Chaccone in d-minor
Bach - II Partita in c-minor
F. Chopin - Barcarole in F sharp major, Op. 60
                Ballade in f-minor
