Rach 2
on: January 16, 2011, 03:51:49 AM
So I'm preparing the first movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto for a competition coming up in a couple weeks. I play everything about the same tempo as Kissin (some differences), and most of it is fine, except for one particular section near the end of the first half of the piece: "Un Poco Piu Mosso"

Page 15-17 [link removed by moderator]. Tempo I play is half note = 80-84

The main issue is at rehearsal 7 - I can play separate hands with no trouble, but putting the two together jumbles up both hands. I think the main issue is that once left hand comes into play, my attention shifts between the two, and it becomes difficult to play the right hand correctly then. Obviously I'm going to continue to practice separate hands until it seems completely natural for both hands. I have also practiced syncopated rhythms and the like for both hands.

Any suggestions as to how to make this process faster?

Try practicing with both hands very, very slowly a few times. Then increasing the speed slightly over and over each time playing it from end to end. This method aids in muscle memory and should help.

Once you've mastered both hands, put them together at very slow tempo.  So slow that you'll want to kill yourself by the time you've finished one measure, count out loud too.  Then speed up slowly.  Very slowly.  2-4bpm max.  It's slow, excruciating, work, but it'll pay off.

I've already been doing both of those, but thanks anyway! It's almost there as well, so I guess it just needed some focused work.
