Copyright on Rachmaninoff's Own Recordings?
on: January 29, 2011, 08:15:03 PM
This seems sort of strange place for this, but the description of the board did say recordings, I would have figured it would have gone under misc.

Anyways, does anyone know when Rachmaninoff's piano recordings (both of his own works and his work with others, such as Fritz Kreisler) come into the public domain?
Pieces:
Beethoven - Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31 No. 2
Chopin - Nocturne in Bb minor Op. 9 No. 1
Debussy - "La Danse De Puck"
Somers - Sonnet No. 3, "Primeval"
Gershwin - Concerto in F

I'm not completely sure but I think they came to public domain in 1993 (50 years after the death of the author).

I believe it differs for recordings - 50 years after they're released.  That's why Cliff Richard is in such a palava.

Well if that's the case, then shouldn't the complete recordings be available online for free?  If so, then does anyone know where?

It's hardly commercially viable to give stuff away.  If you're good with torrents: https://www.kickasstorrents.com/sergei-rachmaninoff-rachmaninoff-plays-rachmaninoff-milana-t2406429.html In fact I might just download that myself!

Yes, 50 years after first public release of a recording, in practically all countries. If they're not available for free it's simply because no one has yet felt like spending the time and money (after all, servers and bandwidth cost something) to put them up.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

If anyone is interested, I did find one site that claims to have em all, it's in Russian though, and I haven't verified whether this is, in fact, the entirety of his discography, but regardles: https://www.senar.ru/records/

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
