Appropriate Attire
on: February 17, 2011, 06:59:14 AM
I just won a concerto competition and am now having a problem deciding what to wear for the upcoming concert. I don't perform regularly, but when I do, it's usually in informal recitals so appropriate attire there is a no brainer. This will be a somewhat more formal occasion. I know the orchestra will be wearing black (jackets for men). I don't own a black suit, but I do have a black tuxedo. Even though the tux is rather understated, I'm wondering if that's too formal for a Sunday afternoon concert, and if I need to go out and purchase a black suit (something I haven't needed in years and don't expect to any other time). Does it really matter? Bow tie? Any thoughts?

Like this:
Sharkskin is the only thing appropriate for a Sunday afternoon.

If it were me (in UK) I would wear black open necked shirt and black trousers regardless of what the orchestra were wearing. Plenty of A-list pianists do just that, even on big occasions.

Firstly, congrats to you.
In addition to dressing like Berezovsky in the above example, I also propose dressing like Feodor Amirov, like below:

Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro
Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

If it's in the afternoon a tux is fine. But I guess you get the gist from the above posts that anything goes these days. I remember once I and the conductor suffered in tails while the men in the orchestra were in open collar white shirts because it was 100°+ weather.
