This is a very good friend of mine.  I'm curious what people will have to say about her playing.  I think it's good!!

I saw her play this 4 years ago. Honestly, I've grown to dislike her playing even more over the years, the more I have researched her playing. She just seems like another overly polished, shallow conservatory product to me, with no sense of individuality as an artist. Sorry, but she doesn't do it for me. I'm honestly waiting for someone else to perform Carl Vine's 3rd piano sonata (Elizabeth is the dedicatée), such as Katia Skanavi (who is currently performing the work, and who I have heard promising things about from my teacher).

I liked her playing very much. To me it sounded and looked as if she were experiencing the whole story of the Earlking Ballade herself while she played! And this inspite of it being a competition! Biggybig respect!

I think what we hear may depend to some extent on where we come from.

Erlkonig is the piece that got me into Schubert, and even made me start studying German.

I thought it interesting that one commenter on Youtube said that Richter could never play this way, when he has a fantastic recording of this piece... (probably unknown to the commenter)...

No, this is Liszt's transcription for solo piano. When the poster said "the original", he meant the song that Schubert wrote for voice and piano.

Hmmmm...excellent, masterful, of course, and much more intimate (and I should have realized unthinkingly that tis a lied-sorry ).

I personally think  Otter/Abbado in the orchestral version is, I dunno, some may find her over the top; a bit melodramatic, but I think the level of passion is perfect and I think she renders a better distinction between the various (character's) voices.  
 
I've heard a lot of people say they prefer a male voice for this song. I don't know if it's just 'cuz it's the first I ever listened to but I just looooove my posted rendition of Otter and Abbado!

Do they ever do this with four singers, one for each of the voices?...

Are we talking about the pianist or the singer here? - As far as singers go, FiDi is way the best interpreter in my opinion, yet I love the voice quality & restraint of Eula Beale (despite a slight English accent)but dislike her pianist;  I am enthralled & terrified by Jessye Norman's version. . . .but then,  I also positively worship the late Hans Hotter.

To be frank, I really don't like the orchestral-song version posted here, & for my two cents worth as regards the original post featuring the piano version, I find the pianist's playing quite astonishingly virtuoso; but to me the Lied form is the most comprehensive & demanding of all vocal music, & as this was written by Schubert as a Lied,  the lack of words seems to me a serious drawback.
