It depends on who you're trying to impress. Evidently, the members of this forum are NOT impressed by Fantasie-Impromptu (there was another thread about that piece being a show-off), but whenever I play it for my friends and family, they are completely awestruck.

The other day, a beginning student of mine asked what the metronome was. I set it to a slow tempo and played his *ridiculously easy* piece (I think it was Lightly Row) along with the beat. Then, I showed him how the metronome can be set at a really fast tempo, too. I played his piece again at 200 bpm and his mom just about fell out of her chair. She was like, "Holy cow, you're really good!" Haha, see, some people are easier to impress than others. So tell us who you are showing off to.

Wow, fleet, you teach? :O

and I agree. But for most people, having hard pieces the don't understand won't impress them as much as simple, overplayed pieces like fur elise.

Like I bet people are gonna fall asleep if you play scarbo from gaspard de la nuit, or islamey.

But if you play some richard clayderman piece, a lot of people are gonna be like wow, you're good

The theme tune from Eastenders is bound to blow them away.

Definately one of my favourite songs.

Oh, yeah, play something familiar and it will impress them more. Fur Elise is a great one. :)

ongaku, I started teaching about a year ago. My students are *mostly* beginners, but I hope to be qualified enough to teach other levels in the future. I've been surprised, actually, by how much I like it. When I was younger, I loved performing but was turned off at the thought of having to teach or accompany for a living (that's why I chose not to study music in college). It's ironic that I am now working to set myself up for a future in both teaching and accompaying. Not because I have to, but because I enjoy it so much. :)

Rach 3 is an easy crowd pleaser. Here's what I do:

- Buy Rach 3 live recording on CD (Yefim Bronfman version the best in my opinion)
- Arrange all the shoes in your house outside your front door
- Invite your friends to come over to your place for a barbeque
- Just as they pull up to your front door and get out of the car, hit the play button.... start somewhere in the Ossia Cadenza
- Have your brother or mom answer the door and tell them you're in the middle of a performance but will come outside as soon as your done
- Friends wait outside
- 30 mins later, you nail the final chords and rather than bask in the rapturous applause (bear in mind it's a live recording CD) you go outside to meet your friends.
- Apologize profusely for being late..... tell them some of your parents friends came over and you had to crank out a quick tune to appease them.

And that's it.
