Rach 2 and Horacio Gutierrez
on: April 02, 2011, 04:26:49 AM
Just got back from seeing the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 played by Horacio Gutierrez with the Cleveland Symphony.
Amazing...

I saw him play Beethoven's 4th Concerto a year or two ago. Indeed amazing.

Definitely one of the most neglected pianists out there, and one of the hardest working. My teacher (a friend of his) once said that he practiced 10 hours a day for a concert performance! His recording of the Prokofiev 2nd Concerto is one of my all time favorite recordings of piano music. Also, as a Latin American myself, he is someone our community can be very proud of.

He was incredible. Completely disinterested in any showiness whatsoever, all music, all the time. Not a harsh tone to be heard, and he had such an immaculate sense of time, that he was using little rubatos in places I'd never thought possible.
He made it all look so terribly easy. In fact, when he walked on stage, he looked as if he had just walked in from a pub after having a pint and some good bar food, and decided "You know what, I feel like playing a Rachmaninoff Concerto."

I heard him play the Rach 2 in Miami this year. What an incredible performance! He was superb.
