Sugestions for a "romantic" piece
on: August 22, 2011, 06:52:32 PM
Hello, everyone!

Befero I go on, I must say I am conscious and completely aware that this is going to going to seem totally pathetic and stupid.
...okay, maybe I went overboard with that.

So, There is someone I really like and if everrthing goes well I'd really apreciate to play a pretty piece.

The problem is, I'm no expert musician. It hasn't been too long since I've started playing (almost 2 years now) and I shouldn't take anything too difficult. I guess this is the main problem, so I'm looking for something within my abilities.

I am looking for something sort of melancholic, embracing, and yet, striking.
Many pieces have come to mind, such as the obvious Beetoven's Mondeschien Sonata 1st Movement, but, like all others, it's diffuculty would require too much time from me. Yeah... That wouldn't be much a problem if I wasn't running agiainst the clock.   :'(
I can't tell what's to come, but it's likely that I will have only one chance to do that and I want to do it right.
Even if things don't go out the way I expect, I will still have an extra piece to my repertorie - That alone is a good enough reward.

It might sound naive, but really don't know what to expect from the other users, so I'm ready for whatever trolling might be lying in wait for me. ¬¬

I thought I had to tell the whole situation because english is not my mother language and I can't express my self clarly with only a few words on this subject.

Just for conclusion, I'd like to thank for your answers in advance; and also for the possible trolls for at least taking their time!

That is... if there actually is going to be any replies  :-X

Perhaps you might want to try some of the Amélie pieces by Yann Tiersen, Comptine d'un autre éte or Valse d'Amélie, they are not very hard but very effective along the lines of your endeavour :) Or Chopin prelude op.28, 4 or 6. Or something like "Erster Verlust" or "Little Study" from Schumann's Album for the young, you don't have to tell her that it is from this album, just play it for her with a lot of feeling :)

Ha! Thank you, pianowolfi.

I talked to my teacher earlier today and she insisted for me to learn the 1st movement of Moonlight Sonata... I was embarassed to tell her the whole situation and I think she didn't understand what I was trying to tell her. She insisted so hard though I couldn't say no to her. (even though I did a thousand times!)

Either way, I'm still going to take a loonk into the pieces you've mentioned that I don't know yet. Thanks again!

You could try MacDowell "To a Wild Rose," really easy but tender and beautiful, or Schumann "Of Strange Lands and People's," not hard, but a nice tune. If you want something more dramatic and melancholic you could try the Prelude from the Bb minor PandF in Book 1 of the Well Tempered Clavier. It may be hard to read because of the 5 flats, but it's not terribly hard to play. Traumerei by Schumann is also approachable, romantic and not as overdone as the Moonlight sonata. One of Mendelsohn's Songs Without Words, "Consolation" may also be appropriate. Good Luck.
